Utilities cut coal contracts threaten Ohio mining jobs
Three large utilities plan to terminate about three million tons of Consolidation Coal Co. Ohio coal, risking hundreds of miner jobs and about 75 million dollars in Consol revenue. Cleveland Electric Illuminating, Detroit Edison, and an unnamed Michigan utility cut contracts to stockpile low sulfur coal for EPA sulfur dioxide rules, with 1.6 million tons cut by CLE and 1.15 million by Detroit Edison plus 450,000 by the Michigan utility, affecting Consol's 2,000 Ohio employees and a 39 million dollar payroll. The EPA hearings last summer examined the potential economic impact, while the Supreme Court denied challenges to the Ohio sulfur dioxide plan.
