In Davie Florida a substitute driver guided a bus full of elementary students on a 40 mile, two county trip after the kids directed her off course. The bus broke down and mechanics were needed. the children arrived at Nova Elementary for lunch.
UPI reports official sources say Communist forces in South Vietnam total 240 000, down from 270 000 since 1967, contributing to a lull that kept U S deaths at a 34 month low. Dale Robertson announced Johnny Cash as Entertainer of the Year at CMA awards in Nashville. Cash received multiple honors including male vocalist and single record for A Boy Named Sue.
Rosemary Stack wife of actor Robert Stack was among two women injured in a single car crash that killed Kathryn Lund near Sacramento California’s Metropolitan Airport. The crash happened on a rain slick road when the vehicle went off the roadway.
The United Auto Workers began striking American Motors Corp at 12:01 a.m. after the labor contract deadline passed without a settlement. AMC, Wisconsin’s largest employer, faced a nationwide work stoppage as union members walked off the job.
A 17 year old miniskirted teacher's aide from Arroyo Grande was held captive for 28 hours by a desperate kidnapper. She told police she did as he commanded and sat in the car. She was found bound and gagged in a women's restroom at a ballpark near the California Medical Facility.

Rosie Hager, 22, was charged with first degree manslaughter after allegedly shooting estranged husband John Hager, 24, outside the Sandusky Police Station at 2:15 a.m. The couple, separated, argued near the Ramada Inn then joined in a car outside the station where the shooting occurred. Bond set at $2000. arraignment expected in Sandusky Municipal Court today. An autopsy was planned. coroner's ruling pending.
