A 200000 year old skull found in the Pyrenees last August is linked to a nearby jawbone found a year earlier. Prof. Jean Piveteau of the University of Paris calls the skull an ice age relic that fills a key gap in human evolution, ranking among the era’s top discoveries.
Plain Dealer pressmen walked off over a safety dispute halting publication of Ohio's largest paper. The spokesman called the strike illegal and said the paper would seek an injunction. Union says presses were speeded up endangering workers. In Washington, 15 persons including Sen. Taft Jr. are under serious consideration for Supreme Court vacancies.
Senate aide William Saxbe reports 66.25 percent of Ohio respondents favor Phase I of Nixon wage price rent controls from a poll of over 35 000 residents. Inflation cited as nation's top problem by 38.5 percent. Indochina War second at 26.25 percent. The Cincinnati Bar Association endorses five Municipal Court candidates while rating seven others not qualified, including Judge Paul E. Gilday who calls it politically motivated. A Franklin County crash injures a policeman and two students when a police cruiser hits a stop sign refusing bus.
Fay Farley a senior education major and three year cheerleader was named the University of Toledo's first black homecoming queen in UTs 99 year history. She was crowned at a rally for the homecoming game against Western Michigan and will reign during the ceremonies.
Weather today in Norwalk reaches 68 with no precipitation reported. Tonight and Saturday bring cooler skies with highs in the upper sixties to low seventies and only small chances of rain. Marriage licenses issued for De Leon Moyar of Norwalk and Murr Rew of New London. Deaths include Haddick Wolf Lamb White Lortcher and infant Young.
Huron County Commissioners will adopt a resolution to form a county aging committee. Ohio official Campbell Warren outlined programs and the plan to create a directory of aging services and pursue federal funds on a matching basis. The committee aims to address income housing health welfare transportation and loneliness among residents 60 and older.
Seattle report:Frank Van Geystel, 32, dangled four stories above concrete for about six minutes after a safety belt link failed. He was saved by Western International Hotels executives Lynn Himmelman and J William Heithan as onlookers filmed and Fire Department was called. In Cincinnati, a three judge panel ruled Ohio students may vote where they study, voiding home county voting limits for students. The decision affects Xavier University Edgecliff College students and may alter state election rules.
The General Assembly adjourned for the weekend with no new progress on Ohio's budget tax program, now three months overdue.
Dayton City School District will close after Oct. 27 due to exhausted funds, affecting nearly 54 000 students. State Supt. Martin W. Essex says an advance of 1.5 million will keep schools open for seven days, with a Nov. 12 ballot on a 10.5 mill levy and a Nov. 2 renewal levy. Classes would extend five days next June if approved.
Simon Kuznets, Russian born American economist and Harvard professor, wins the 1971 Nobel Prize in Economics for his empirically based interpretation of economic growth. The $90,000 award honors his work on national income measurement and development. Proceeds from a local benefit matinee at Norwalk Theater support kidney disease victim Harry Greiner, 50 cent admission plus a can of food.
Sheriff John Borgia says he discouraged Willard area bar owner Alex Gunaris from hosting topless dancers at the Fireplace on Ohio 103 east of Willard. Gunaris, who has used Mansfield go go dancers for about a year, argued that topless acts are common in nearby cities. The Reflector could not reach Gunaris for comment.
