Victims rise as floodwaters engulf mercy launch in Tamaulipas

In Ciudad Victoria area floodwaters from Hurricane Inez swamped a mercy launch with supplies to marooned villages. Fifteen of nineteen aboard perished, while four survivors were rescued by a human chain formed by rural police and villagers along the Tambesi River near Tamaulipas.

Ex-GIs face theft charges over Lenningrad bear

Two American ex-GIs, Buel Wortham and Craddock Gilmour, are detained in Russia on aggravated theft charges after a bronze bear sculpture was found in their luggage at the Finnish border. The men, both discharged U S Army lieutenants, were arrested Oct 1 and held in a Lukian jail while consular access was sought. The maximum penalty is six years.

EHOVE unveils six building plan for $3.8 million vocational complex

The EHOVE board heard preliminary designs for a $3.8 million six building vocational school planned for 1,100 students in Erie Huron Ottawa counties. The Commons will anchor the site with five specialized blocks surrounding it. A $2.9 million bond and 1.25 mill levy will appear on the November ballot across 13 districts.

McNamara rules out Viet Nam tour extensions for troops

Defense Secretary Robert McNamara told thousands of U S servicemen aboard the USS Oriskany in the Tonkin Gulf that no circumstances would extend their one year tour in Viet Nam. He repeated the pledge in Saigon as shifts faced monsoon preparations and possible offensives.

Ruling Made On One Of Two Charges In Fatality

Charles S. Perkins 17 of New London RD 2 was deemed a juvenile traffic offender after a hearing in Huron County Juvenile Court for an accident that killed 16 year old Linda Wharton and injured two others. The court deferred the manslaughter delinquency charge pending a probation report while suspending his driver's license.

Willard Man Found Guilty In Delinquency Case

Kenneth Allen 20 of Willard was found guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor by Judge Russell T. Antrim in Huron County Juvenile Court. He was fined 200 dollars, ordered to pay court costs, and sentenced to 90 days in jail with 100 dollars of the fine and 80 days of jail suspended.

Pollster Predicts Democrats Lose 40 to 45 House Seats

UPI reports Elmo Roper told the World Affairs Council in Cleveland that dissatisfaction with President Johnson will cost the Democrats 40 to 45 seats in the House in November. He cited Viet Nam as the main issue and inflation as a close second.

Six Year Old Boy Struck Near School

Foster Street boy Thomas Ringle six was hit by a car near League Street School while running north. He was taken to Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital with contusions to both elbows and chest and treated and released. Driver Elden Hartley 32 of Minard said the boy ran in front of his westbound car. two witnesses backed the account. no charges filed.

Paul Miller Elected by School Assn

Paul R. Miller of Norwalk City School Board was chosen for the Executive Committee of the Northwest Ohio Region of the Ohio School Board Association. He is the first Huron County resident to hold the post. Norwalk Superintendent Dr. Sturgis Corbin joined Miller at the Bowling Green regional meeting as hundreds of educators attended. State School Superintendent Martin Essex gave the main address. Miller is an attorney with Miller Miller & Miller in Norwalk and resides at 3 Central Blvd.
