Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey halted campaign activities in New York and Ohio due to a mild flu. Aides said he would rest at the hotel and keep no engagements for the rest of the day after appearing on NBC Today and addressing supporters seeking debates with opponents.
In Hebron Ohio a barking water spaniel woke Bobbie 13 who fainted from carbon monoxide. Brother Jimmy 16 carried his siblings to safety and alerted Buckeye Lake Rescue Unit.
Democratic vice presidential candidate Edmund S. Muskie urged federal law to require presidential debates and criticized Richard Nixon and Senate Republicans for spurning televised debates during a daylong tour of Newark Camden Trenton Woodbridge and West Paterson.

A 12 year old girl was chased about five blocks by a man with a butcher knife near Lawson Dairy Store on her way to League Street School. A passing police car deterred the assailant and the officer later searched a warehouse with no evidence found.
Apollo 7 with astronauts Walter Schirra Don Eisele and Walter Cunningham lifted off from Cape Kennedy at 11:14 a.m. EDT for an 11 day, 163 orbit Earth mission. The crew tested docking maneuvers and photographed the spent stage while radio praising the mission as it rode the rocket. Elsewhere, a fight at Jolly Lanes in Bellevue prompted a call to the Huron County Sheriff’s Department.
Coast guard reports a 400 ton interisland ferry Dumaguete carrying 300 to 500 people sank near Zamboanga City in Moro Gulf before dawn. Survivors say sharks attacked at least one person as rescue boats pulled aboard 18 passengers including 24 year old Ethelwaldo Angeles. Only two life rafts available as passengers clung to the vessel during the leak and rapid sinking en route to a Virgin de Pilar fiesta.
Police reported $284 in cash and $35 in checks missing from the Nite Life at Milan Avenue and Cline Street. Manager James L. Oakley said an employee took the day’s receipts and hid them in a drawer near the register. No forced entry found though one door lock was defective and could have been picked.
Erie Huron County Community Action Commission leaders tell Congressman Reese of a bleak prospect for a larger budget, with about 250000 expectable for 1969 and a total ask of 476081. Officials note staff underpayment and staffing shortages while poverty remains high in the two counties.
Elmer Glaser 64 of New London and owner of Glaser Ford died at his home after a short illness. His son Sp 4 Randy E. Glaser, who was to be discharged today from Fort Benning, served two years including a year in Vietnam. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Monday at Eastman Funeral Home.
South Central Board of Education will bid for a new 66 passenger bus chassis after a Thursday night meeting. President Richard Flint said bids should be ready by the November meeting. The board also relaxes aides' time limits and links pay to hours worked. A three year Keiser Insurance fire and extended coverage policy was approved. Jehovah’s Witnesses are permitted to hold a meeting at the school February 21 to 23.
UPI reports a Perspective from Blue Cross of Southwest Ohio predicting family income could rise 11 fold by 2000. Harris of UC Medical School says not alarmed though prices would surge. examples include bread at 30 cents becoming 3.30 and a 20 000 policy reaching 165 a month.
