Retired General Curtis LeMay, the American Independent Party vice presidential hopeful, criticizes press coverage at a Los Angeles press conference, insisting his comments on nuclear weapon use were misrepresented and stressing no one desires war.
Sunny this morning with increasing clouds and a chance of showers tonight and Thursday. Highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s, turning cooler Thursday. Tuesday highs near 66, lows around 35 in Norwalk. Washington dispatch reports Democratic strategists tell Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey he can still win the 1968 election. A DNC memo contends national polls overstate Nixon strength and that state by state swings could boost Humphrey in the remaining four weeks.
A state sponsored survey will test seventh and twelfth graders in Norwalk on sex drugs alcohol tobacco and human development. The district was chosen by random sampling and tests will be given November 6 or soon after with input from the board on pretest copies. The board also hired four new teachers approved an annuity program and approved library renovations.
The House, in a deadlocked session, debated allowing televised presidential candidate debates. Republicans threaten further delays on procedural matters while Democrats push the measure. Speaker John W. McCormack ordered the chamber doors locked in response to GOP tactics.
Norwalk Memorial Home gains renewed Medicare certification following a HEW re evaluation. Earlier an Oct 10 withdrawal threat was halted after administrator William Slabodnick protested. Carl Buraczewski of the SSA Chicago office confirms deficiencies were corrected and HEW will issue a retraction.
The Chamber of Commerce has elected six new directors to three-year terms. Re-elected are Harlon Jennings and Walter Kuhlman representing industry, Donald Blosser and Tom Paffenbarger representing professions and services, Robert Berry and George Schild from retail. Remaining on the board are twenty members, with officers to be elected at a noon luncheon Tuesday at the Elks Country Club.
The Berlin Milan Citizens for Better Education will tabulate survey responses tonight after extending the deadline by one day. Surveys were returned to a Norwalk post office box and will be picked up this afternoon. voters weigh eight questions on a proposed high school bond, board performance, and school merger.
The Norwalk Theatre will display film ratings under a four category system G M R and X. The change follows a joint agreement by U S producers distributors and exhibitors announced Tuesday. Sheriff John Borgia notes the county releases weekly rating lists.
The Court of Appeals upheld Gary Freddie Stanley's 120 year sentence for two Norwalk burglaries. Stanley claimed Asst. Prosecutor Ronald Freeman coerced a guilty plea with a 400 year threat. His post conviction petition was denied by Judge Robert Vetter and the case advanced on appeal.
George C. Wallace repeats a single campaign speech as he moves from Boston to Scranton. The banner mocked his pose, and Wallace boasted he speaks the same lines to supporters and skeptics alike, criticizing rivals who vary messages between Jacksonville and Long Beach.
Wallace campaign in Huron County confirms a Oct 18 banquet at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Home Norwalk with speaker Bud Kochensbarger Ohio American Independent Party chair. Robert Dean heads local effort and tickets are at Wallace Headquarters.
