Gen Curtis E LeMay known for hard line Vietnam victory stance is chosen by George C Wallace as the vice presidential candidate for the American Independent Party ticket breaking new ground in the 1968 campaign.
The Air Force will phase out about 17 500 Air Reservists and Air National Guardsmen from two year active duty hitches by June 30. One aeromedical evacuation squadron and three air terminal support squadrons will be demobilized by year end. Meanwhile Capitol police seized Abbie Hoffman and stripped a shirt believed to be made from an American flag as Yippies are arrested during HUAC inquiry at the Capitol.
Mrs Shelia Ann Thorns celebrated her 30th birthday after giving birth toBritain's first sextuplets. Five surviving babies, all in incubators, fought for life in a hospital wing while one infant girl died shortly after birth.

The Huron County Board of Health approved a 500 dollar license fee for county sanitary landfills with the levy taking effect January 1 after two more readings. The panel also gave Carl’s Diner operator’s agent 30 days to fix deficiencies and authorized attendance at a Norwalk planning seminar for health staff.
In Mexico City troops and tanks moved to crush snipers after a protest rally of about 10 000 students turned deadly. Officials warned of possible Olympic cancellation as at least 26 people were killed and over 100 wounded in a nine block square housing area.
In a pre-dawn assault, army units surrounded the presidential palace and seized President Fernando a Terry, who was taken away shoeless and furious. The junta suspended constitutional rights and claimed all armed forces backed the move, though officials said only the army acted.
A daytime blackout hit Huron County offices around 10 05 shutting electric typewriters and adding machines. The Board of Health meeting continued by candlelight with diabetics clinic in progress and 50 people waiting while offices on the third floor stayed darkest. The outage lasted about 20 minutes and investigators had not determined the cause at deadline.
Incumbents and challengers spoke at Lyme Congregational Church Candidate Night drawing about 15 attendees. Officials outlined duties and urged support while rivals praised a two party system. other topics included a welfare levy and a bonded training school for the retarded.
Negotiations began after about 150 Akron Standard Mold Co. workers walked out at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday over wages contract language and term length. Pickets formed sign bearing cars as union officials and company leaders met with a federal mediator in Willard to resolve a dispute. The union seeks a two year contract with annual wage negotiation. the company favors a three year pact with fixed wages.
Wilbur C. Edwards elected executive vice president and chief executive officer of the Huron County Banking Co. He succeeds the late J. W. Matsch who died August 16 and had led the bank since 1960. Edwards has 25 years in banking and prior posts in California and Sharon Pa. He and his wife Marion and three children live at 225 Benedict Avenue.
The Huron County Board of Health tabled a proposed rat control ordinance today. Sanitarian Clarence Ellett quipped about needing federal funds and joked about expanding staff, while board member Mrs. John Wallace floated the idea of a “The Rat Patrol.”
At the Norwalk Park and Recreation Commission October session the city swimming pool incomes rose by 1200 dollars to a total of 6861.10 thanks to higher fees and efficient management by Tom Heckelman and eight lifeguards. An additional 290.82 was saved when Hug Concrete Paving Co donated a cement walk around the Whitney Field wading pool.
Downtown Dodge, Inc. received a contract from Huron County Commissioners for a 1969 four door eight cylinder car with automatic transmission power steering air conditioning tinted glass heater and defroster. The vehicle will serve the commissioners and the Sheriff's Department and must be delivered within 40 days.
