UPI reports Republican presidential nominee Richard Nixon stepped down from the Baltusrol Golf Club in August amid criticism it discriminated against Jews and Negroes. An aide said Nixon resigned to disassociate from non campaign activities.
Police said an accidental yank on an emergency cord caused a speeding passenger train to ram another train in a deep gorge near Derveni. The wreck left 34 dead and 90 injured as derailed coaches piled two to three high at the gorge floor, blocking ambulance access.
A Delaware Senate committee recommends sterilizing welfare mothers with two illegitimate children and placing long-time welfare children in state institutions. It calls for a fully state funded welfare system free of local rules after months of closed meetings since March.
In Honolulu a local Democratic group Speakers for Humphrey Muskie invited Republican vice presidential candidate Spiro Agnew to make another campaign stop and offered to help pay travel costs. The telegram to National Republican Headquarters cited Agnew's prior island appearance as boosting Humphrey. In Cincinnati Dr Christiaan Barnard, who performed the first heart transplant, warned that transplanted hearts will eventually be rejected by recipient bodies.
The Citizens Income Tax Study Committee voted 6-2 to keep meetings closed noting it would aid department heads to speak freely. Members Bishman Seitz and others challenged the policy while noting public informing is part of the committee’s duty. Mayor Stokes faced a separate subpoena over unlawful action during the Glenville snipings and the use of Cleveland Now funds.
About 75 000 members of the International Longshoremen's Association walked out from Maine to Texas at 12 01 a m EDT when their contract expired. They picketed New York docks halting loading and unloading and forcing ship passengers to handle their own luggage as federal machinery moved to return them to work under Taft Hartley.
UPI reports spectators and protesters plan a comic taunt during three days of hearings by a House Un-American Activities subcommittee on street disorders at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this August. Jerry Rubin pledges to appear topless with a bullet-bandoleer and an M16 rifle.

In San Antonio a driver promised jobs in Chicago to 46 Mexicans paying 10 to 12 dollars. The locked unventilated truck left one dead and twelve hospitalized from heat and suffocation. Others jailed for illegal entry as investigators probe the voyage.
Hubert H. Humphrey told a national television audience from Salt Lake City that he would stop bombing North Vietnam if Hanoi agrees to restore the Demilitarized Zone. He framed the move as a peace risk worth taking, noting it would mark a shift from Johnson era Vietnam policy but not a radical departure.
Auditor Charles Hipp says Norwalk’s temporary pause on the income tax ordinance eases setup pressure while preparations continue. He is still seeking an administrator knowledgeable in income taxes. Frank Seringer and Chaney assist as consultants. Equipment has been ordered and minor office adjustments made. forms and regulations will wait for ordinance adoption.
Cuyahoga County Republican co-chairman Robert E. Hughes warned that party committeemen aiding George Wallace will be fired. He said Wallace is a menace to both major parties and to the United States.
The Norwalk Charter Commission mailed copies of the proposed charter to city residents who voted in the last general election. Chairman Domenic Coletta urged reading the charter for an educated vote and offered to speak to groups, including a Kiwanis Club briefing on Thursday noon, to answer questions.
Mansfield Ohio police fire and service department workers called in sick in a wage dispute. Only three of 93 police reported for duty and five of 80 firefighters came to work. Of 435 service department workers 35 showed up as talks failed over a $700 annual raise.
Democratic vice presidential hopeful Edmund S. Muskie says he would be delighted to have President Johnson campaign for the ticket though unsure it would help. In a TV taping session Muskie and running mate Hubert H. Humphrey acknowledge a mid campaign slump. He faults no one but notes the election would be better later.
Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital administrator William Slabodnick accuses HEW of bureaucratic bungling as the nursing home loses Medicare certification after Oct. 10 for listed deficiencies. HEW in Chicago says reconsideration requires state report and corrected plans. Slabodnick cites staffing fixes and urges reinstatement.
