Norwalk High School clinched the Class AA state championship with a 27-17 victory over Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas at Welcome Field. The Truckers, 11-1 season, built a 14-10 halftime lead and shut down the Knights’ passing attack while piling up 268 yards. Dan Hipp directed the offense and Brad Mason rushed for 110 yards as Norwalk earned its first Northern Ohio League title share and claimed Ohio’s Year of the Truckers.

The number of U S and Canadian auto workers laid off before Christmas reached 200000 with Ford and American Motors adding 40000 more layoffs. Ford will cut about 128000 cars and trucks from schedules through March affecting 32475 hourly workers amid weak sales.

Negotiations Break Off in Cleveland Newspaper Strike
Talks between Cleveland Press publishers and The Newspaper Guild ended Friday, halting hopes for a settlement this week in the Plain Dealer strike and Cleveland Press lockout. A union spokesman said discussions broke off indefinitely after Thursday through Friday talks.
