President Nixon told 2000 leading businessmen that dissent is recognized in America and even the vice president has the right to dissent. He referenced last weekend’s antiwar demonstrations and Vice President Agnew’s criticisms of the media, signaling concern over dissent in public discourse.
The Rev. E. W. Bailey, 52, ends 26 years in the Church of the Nazarene to take the police chief job in Arcanum Ohio. He has led congregations in Michigan Florida and Indiana and says the ministry fits police work as he works openly with the community. He adds that being Christian is not sissy in law enforcement.
A 13 month old girl named Kamille Harris was left in the back seat of a car stolen Friday night in Dayton. Police recovered the vehicle early today unharmed with the child still inside as the mother, Mrs James Harris, had gone to the theater box office for tickets.
Ohio Natural Resources Department says DDT and other hard pesticides are not used on state lands to control pests. Director Fred E. Morr notes curtailment since 1965 as research shows ecological dangers. The ban covers shade trees aquatic areas houses and gardens.
Columbus UPI reports Ohio Farm Bureau Federation President Robert Summer says farmers are sick and tired of higher real estate taxes. The federation adopted a resolution against tax increases until the legislature enacts tax reform.
Mayor Raymond Shepherd called the dorm room detention of four Ohio University students perhaps overzealous but said all legal requirements were observed. Police held the students for three hours without charge pending a search warrant, drawing anger from OU President Claude R. Sowle over the tense police student clash.

Three fugitives fled from a Galveston county jail with two accomplices armed with a shotgun and deer rifles. They captured two women and a boy near La Grange, held them hostage, and killed one escapee while wounding a deputy sheriff who later aided the manhunt. Police warned the trio would not be taken alive.
The Senate rejected Clement Haynsworth 55 to 45 for the Supreme Court. President Nixon pledged a new conservative nominee early January, citing strict constructionist views and a need to restore balance to the court. Haynsworth weighed resignation amid the defeat.
Two young women died when their car veered off U.S. 6 east of Huron, struck a pole, and wrecked at 12 20 a.m. Peggy A. Mesenburg 18 of Huron and Peggy M. Kramer 19 of Sandusky were dead on arrival at Good Samaritan Hospital Sandusky. The Erie County Sheriff's office said the westbound car left the road on a curve, slid up an embankment, and the top struck a pole. Burial is at Scott Cemetery Huron with services at St. Peter's Catholic Church Huron and at Wheland Funeral Home.
Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad Alan Bean and Richard Gordon sailed the Yankee Clipper back toward Earth after completing eight days in space. Earth control urged rest with the Pacific splashdown planned in two days as the crew echoed satisfaction with the mission.
The city of Norwalk’s complaint against Norfolk and Western Railroad over blocking the Woodlawn Avenue crossing was continued to next Saturday. Two charges allege blocks of one hour eleven minutes on November 12 and 44 minutes on November 9. The delay lets the railroad secure counsel under a new state law allowing service on the local freight agent after crossings are blocked for more than five minutes with three minutes of traffic passage after each five minutes.
Firefighters battled two overnight truck fires but both were out on arrival. A panel truck fire at Friendly Corners lot 75 Townsend Ave started at 7 02 p m in a vehicle owned by Martin Kovach and traced to a wiring short. A semi trailer rear bearing fire at East Main Street and Milan Avenue around 1 40 a m involved Earl Klein as driver and Long Transportation of Detroit as owner with an overheated bearing listed as the cause. both incidents caused minor or no damage.
