Haskell Shanks aged 63, who received permanently implanted mechanical heart pumps three months ago, died in Detroit from kidney failure complications. Sinai Hospital reported the death does not appear related to the device. Shanks lived longer than any other recipient of such a pump.
Former Captain Ernest L. Medina testified at Col. Oran K. Henderson’s court martial that he kept from his brigade commander the fact that his men killed unarmed civilians in My Lai. Medina, 37, had been acquitted of murder charges and described his reluctance to believe civilians were shot by his unit.
A special grand jury report accusing 25 people of deliberate criminal action in the Kent State disorders preceding the May 4, 1970, killings was burned. Portage County Judge Edwin W. Jones lifted the gag rule and the picketing injunction at the courthouse. The report, issued Oct. 16, 1970, had been ordered destroyed by a federal judge.
Rep Louis Stokes says Ft Hood was chosen as a prime example of injustice against black soldiers and the probe will cover the post and nearby Killeen. He cited years of letters from servicemen worldwide reporting racism in the military.

In Charleston West Virginia most of the nations 80000 coal miners remained on strike awaiting clarification of a new contract that would by 1973 raise daily wages from 37 to 50 and double the union pension fund contribution from 40 to 80 cents per ton of coal mined. West Virginia governor Arch Moore who helped negotiate the agreement predicted on his return that many locals would seek clarity before returning to work.
President Nguyen Van Thieu warned that South Vietnam faces economic disaster and proposed sweeping reforms. He called for a free market for the piaster, tax and tariff changes, and large pay hikes for soldiers and civil servants. The crisis follows U S aid cuts and fewer dollars from returning service members. Thieu also seeks continued U S assistance. Local items note wage hearing requests, coal price board actions, new Clancy drive in at 170 Milan Ave, tentative building approvals, and voter registration deadlines in Huron County for upcoming special elections.
A copier at Virginia Commonwealth University was used to produce counterfeit one dollar bill images that fooled a coin machine. The Secret Service said photocopies of the face side were made on a standard office copier and that the counterfeiting had been active for about a week or 10 days before being stopped.
Two Norwalk women were honored by the Firelands Red Cross Chapter at a tea at Plum Brook Country Club. Mrs. C B Thomas earned the Chapter Hall of Fame for 30 years of service, while Mrs. Charles Meta Price was named Outstanding Red Cross Volunteer for 1971 by unanimous vote.
