In New Delhi the conservative old guard of Congress expelled Prime Minister Indira Gandhi threatening her premiership and triggering a political crisis. Hundreds protested at her headquarters while a leader warned the nationwide struggle against her opponents known as The Syndicate has only begun.
Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida announces plans to wed American George Kaufman after meeting him in New York three months ago. She says the couple will marry soon though the date and location are not yet decided.
Welfare Secretary Robert H. Finch reportedly backs a seven month commission report calling for ending DDT in the United States. Columnists Mankiewicz and Braden said Finch endorsed the study and sent it to the White House. Finch has no authority to ban DDT.
An eight member South Korean military delegation was killed when a jet transport crashed in a storm near Qui Nhon. Five officers including three full colonels served on Lt. Gen. Lee Sae Hoe's staff in South Vietnam. They were checking combat readiness ahead of a Communist winter offensive that began November 3, according to Allied commanders.
Senate whips from both parties forecast a very close confirmation vote for Judge Clement F. Haynsworth Jr. with two or three decisive ballots. Senators Edward M. Kennedy and Robert P. Griffin, both opponents, spoke as the chamber prepared to begin debate.
Milwaukee attorney general John Mitchell told a Republican fund raising dinner that Nixon era policies cannot be formed in street demonstrations. He blamed eroded government decisiveness on cynicism and inflated Johnson era promises.

A 9 000 strong force of Army and Marine troops began moving into Washington to handle possible civil disorders during weekend antiwar demonstrations. Units from Fort Bragg and Camp LeJeune arrived, with additional troops to follow, on federal property unless requested by authorities.
A southeast Cleveland house fire killed six Herman Jackson children aged three to nine on the citys east side. Fire department says the blaze began on the first floor, with victims found in a second floor bedroom. The mother was hospitalized for shock. the father was away at the time.
A second rural residence on Greenwich-Milan Townline Road, Nelson Lewis, was found broken into at 4:30 p.m. The Sheriff's Department investigates possible connections to burglars active in the area in late September and some Erie break-ins.
Margo Pelton 21 was fired over taking a day off to protest U.S. policy in Vietnam. Bank of America reversed the decision after a settlement, saying employees may take unpaid leave for such activities if business remains. Also reports break-ins at Lewis and Andrews residences with stolen TVs radios a tape recorder and cash totaling about $1,000.
President Harry Parke announced the United Fund has tabulated pledges and contributions totaling 51377, up from 38934 the previous day. The campaign stands at 72.5 percent of its 70848 goal, with extension likely to collect outstanding reports and a Friday noon meeting set.
Neil Armstrong told the Geological Society of America convention that during 30 overseas city visits he found no anti American signs or embarrassing questions. He noted fatigue from the Earth voyage and said people felt optimism from the moon landing and believed joint effort can solve earthly problems.
