The 729 foot ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald with 28 to 35 crew disappeared in a fierce Lake Superior gale. Coast Guard reported no survivors, debris and an oil slick found about 50 miles northwest of Sault Ste. Marie as search ships and aircraft scoured the area. The ship departed Superior Sunday with 26 216 tons of taconite ore pellets for Detroit.
