Wisconsin health officials ban most prescriptions for and sales of amphetamines citing abuses by doctors and patients. A doctor violating the ban can face unprofessional conduct charges and possible license suspension or revocation.
City Council approves leasing 2.8 acres of lakefront land for a $25 million Hyatt Regency Hotel. Construction on the 16 story building to begin within 90 days near East Ninth Street. Developer Joseph E Sotak says the luxury hotel will feature a 13 or 14 story atrium lobby with a revolving cocktail lounge.
Washington lawmakers question HEW about a 1976 pamphlet claiming sterilization may increase sexual pleasure for women. Rep. Moss asks if the government promotes hysterectomy and if taxpayers should fund it. In a separate report, the TU-144 completed a brisk inaugural flight from Moscow to Alma Ata, carrying 80 passengers in under two hours.
President Carter said he may delay the nine nation trip set to begin later this month as his energy bill stalled on Capitol Hill. A decision will come by week’s end on whether to forego the 24 000 mile journey to focus on the energy package pending House Senate conference committee action.
Greyhound Bus Lines workers including drivers and maintenance staff staged a wildcat walkout across Cleveland and Akron after contracts expired at midnight Monday. The peaceful strike halted bus schedules and package deliveries, a Greyhound spokesman reported.
