House rejects banks paying interest on checking accounts
The House voted 218 to 134 to remove a proposal allowing banks to pay interest on checking accounts. Rep Fernand J. St Germain, floor manager, blamed trade associations for the defeat. Under current law banks may not pay interest on deposits in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, where a two year experiment existed.
