Meeting Tonight in Norwalk Fires Discussion Aimed at Residents

Norwalk residents on the northside are invited to a 7 p.m. meeting at the Penecostal Church on Glover Avenue organized by the Norwalk Grassroots Anti-Poverty Organization. George Hayduk said the session seeks to clarify actions residents want to take amid several recent low income home fires.

Altoona man released after five year probation in church theft case

Edward Butt, 28, of Altoona, serving time in Huron County Jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, was freed today on five years probation. He had been charged after a teenage girl companion allegedly tried to take money from a coin box at St Pauls Catholic Church in early April.

UPI reports the bulk of American forces pulled off Hamburger Hill in Vietnam today, abandoning the peak near Laos where the battle cost 53 U S GIs killed and 300 wounded. A US commander in the far northern zone said no major units remain on the hill though operations in the area continue.

Fire damages two downtown Norwalk shops

Early morning blaze in Norwalk gutted Larrie’s Wig Shop at 29 E. Main St and caused smoke and water damage to Ringholz and Meyers next door. Fire Chief Kenneth Link blamed faulty wiring and estimated 45 000 dollars in losses, with 30 000 to contents and 15 000 to the building.

Norwalk Pool Passes On Sale For Summer

Season passes for Norwalk City Swimming Pool at Whitney Field are on sale at the Park and Recreation Center. Only 25 passes sold. pool opens June 16. Family passes cost 20 residents 25 out of town. student passes 750 residents 1250 out of town. Entrance without passes is 85 cents. Lessons run June 23 to August 22 in three two week sessions. Family Escapes House Explosion in Sandusky Fire

A Sandusky woman Mrs. Richard Schoene and her son Jeff were injured when a gas leak caused an explosion at their Shelby Street home. The blast shattered front windows and created a 15 foot hole in the wall. damage to the house and contents was at least $20,000.

City Hosts Legionnaires Fifth District Convention in Norwalk

Norwalk will host the Fifth District American Legion annual convention at the Ohio National Guard Armory. Registration runs 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and the meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. Junior W. Tracht, district commander, will preside. The event marks a second Huron County district gathering, following 1962 Monroeville. Ten new county and five division commanders will be installed before district officers and delegates to the National convention in Atlanta.

Federal suspect held in county jail after escape

A 20 year old man, allegedly fleeing a federal prison in Moundsville West Virginia in December, was arrested in Carruthers and is held in the Huron County jail on an assault with a deadly weapon charge. Deputies say he used the names Eugene Dean Eugene Curry and Eugene Short. A WV detainer and extradition are expected.
