Norwalk Athletes Dominate Banquet Awards In Hospital Room
Norwalk High School honored its spring sports with a dessert style banquet. Jim Hoffecker received the Most Valuable Tennis Player award in his hospital room after surgery for appendicitis. Brett Smith earned multiple baseball honors, setting strikeout and stolen base records as Norwalk finished 18-7 and runner-up in several leagues and tournaments.

Bennett Electric Keeps Slim Lead In East Race
Bennett Electric remains in a tight AL East chase after two Wednesday wins at McGuan Park. They defeated Shelter Globe 4 3 in a top game of the year and beat Norwalk Furniture 11 5.
Area Softball Scorers Highlight Wide Range of High Scoring Games
Mike Gross and Dave Baker led three hit efforts for the Factorymen while Bennett’s squad posted 21 hits in a clean defensive win. Mike Finch started with a three run homer and Gross added a later inside the park shot as Denny McCreary notched an inside the park in the seventh. Jeff Clark, Gross, Singer and Ringholz fueled the winners with three hits apiece. In Pugh VFW, two VFW players were ejected and the game was forfeited 7-0 to Borough after the field dismissal. The Foundry closed within a half game of Home Savings with a team victory, Roger Schnee’s three run second inning homer helping. Home Savings cashed seven hits off Ed Mitchell, three in the third inning producing four runs. Gaslight’s attack extended to the eighth before scoring twice, while Knights rallied for four in the fourth and one in the fifth but Gaslight tied it in the sixth. Brian Keane and Harold Simon led the losers with three hits each. Karen’s Drive Inn exploded for a 10 run fourth inning after three in the first, with Asselman and Christman delivering extra base hits and Gould’s squad answering with fourth inning rallies and a five run fifth. Ken Leber, Asselman and Bruce Ebright each had three hits for Karen’s. North Pelham and Bob Cronko also singled for the losers. Jackie Fell’s two extra base hits helped Arctic Cat beat Norwalk Post Control 7-2 in junior softball, as Pest Control led 2-0 until Arctic Cat’s decisive fourth inning. Jean Lewellen doubled triple for the winners. Wende Woelfling, Sandy Sweet and Tami Wagner added singles while Carmen Valario and Mary Rock contributed for Pest Control.
