Student government officials from Norwalk and St. Pauls High Schools assumed posts in Norwalk City offices. They will dine at 6 p.m. with city officials at the Elks Country Club and convene at 7:30 p.m. for the regular council session.
Variable cloudiness and wind with showers and thundershowers late morning and afternoon. Highs 78 to 85, evening showers then clearing. lows 50 to 56. Mostly sunny, cooler Wednesday with a 5:01 a.m. sunrise and 7:48 p.m. sunset. Also marriage license applications listed for several couples.
The Norwalk Chamber of Commerce urged an 80 stall downtown parking lot at West Seminary Street south of the Avalon Hotel lot. City officials questioned funding while chamber members offered to aid financing. Other proposals included limiting Main Street parking to keep spaces for shops and offices.
A 12 year old Bruce Minniear from rural North Fairfield underwent brain surgery at University Hospital Columbus for a brain tumor. The town Lions Club and other groups sponsor a 5 p.m. fish fry at the Grange Hall to raise funds for the Bruce Minniear Fund as Bruce relocates from intensive care.
Supt Sturgis Corbin announced the Norwalk High athletic board decided to retain Tony Zuppe as head football coach in the best interest of the school after a meeting with residents protesting his removal. Principal Erwin Ultican and Athletic Director Grant Walls will plan to confirm staff changes as an assistant coaches review proceeds.
An 18 year old Huron boy, James Andrew Eldridge, pled no contest to petty larceny after a custodian found him going through a girl student’s purse behind Western Reserve High School during a band concert. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail suspended for two years and to pay court costs.
A 21-year-old Santa Barbara mother of two was released on a writ of habeas corpus after refusing sterilization as a condition of probation. She was briefly jailed Monday and awaits a May 31 hearing, with court-appointed attorney Louis Renga guiding the case.
In New York antiwar demonstrators greeted Mrs Lyndon B Johnson and Mayor Lindsay at Riis Houses Plaza with peace signs, while in Saigon militants burned out grievances and 400 Buddhist monks and nuns stood in silent protest before the U S embassy over U S aid to Premier Ky.
Police indicate the same hand weapon that killed Ohio State University professor and rocket author Loren Bollinger may have been used in two earlier unsolved gas station attendant slayings. Ballistics tests matched two slugs from Bollinger's third floor room to the suspected firearm.
Several hundred protesters demonstrated outside the National Fellowship Awards dinner in Philadelphia where Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey received the top award for two decades of moral and political leadership. He urged Philadelphia youth to stay in school during his day-long visit.
