City Man Unveils Worm Machine At Water Street location

Roy Cooper installed a worm vending device at 10 W. Water St. near the train depot. The machine dispenses 15 or 16 night crawlers for 50 cents, operates 24 hours, and uses two quarter slots with cups emerging from a sheet metal box. Cooper plans a name contest and aims for patent protection. The vending setup feeds on over one million worms.

Two Harlem Cops Slain in Harlem Shootout

Two patrolmen were shot to death in Harlem late Friday night in the third attack on New York City police in three days. Waverly Jones, 34, of Manhattan, and Joseph Piagentini, 28, of Long Island were named as the victims. Both had entered the Police Academy on August 1, 1966 and were shot as they emerged from an apartment building where they responded to a sick-person call. The attackers reportedly waited in a white Mustang.

Help Arrives For Vandalism Victim

More than a dozen Norwalk area youths gathered at Sam Spinello's Shoe Shop to clean paint vandalism from Tuesday night. Monica Berner, a Norwalk High freshman, led the first cleanup effort with others joining from a Lutheran Bible Study class.

Chamber of Commerce seeks action after vandalism spate

City officials received a letter from the Chamber of Commerce voicing concern over recent vandalism. The note cites youths loitering between Foster and Prospect Streets, urging full law enforcement response after damage to Spinello Shoe Repair on 72 East Main Street and other incidents in the area.
