Norwalk Charter Meetings Set Across Four Wards

Norwalk holds public meetings in each ward starting June 8 to gauge charter changes. First Ward venue likely Maplehurst School, with further sessions June 15 Second Ward June 17 Third Ward and June 22 Fourth Ward. A missing 16 year old Norwalk High student, Susan Carol Smith, last seen Thursday morning, is described as 5'6 with blue eyes and blonde hair wearing a blue miniskirt and green camouflage jacket. An initiative petition seeks to authorize sale of the municipal electric system for not less than 5 850 000. The measure filed with City Auditor Charles Hipp by Harlon Jennings and a business committee including Kevin Doyle Edward Still Arnold Missler and Edward Prack.

Norwalk High Students Score State Rankings on May Test

Five Norwalk High students earned state rankings on the Final District State Scholarship tests administered May 1. Clair Ross led local finishers with seventh in Music History and Literature. Tom Betz ninth in Second Year German, Ann Johnson eleventh in English 12, Kathryn Lasley fifteenth in First Year Latin, and Daryl Smith honorable mention in Advanced Algebra.

Twin siblings Martha and Mike Hay named top at St Paul High

Martha Hay is valedictorian with a 97.00 average and Mike Hay is salutatorian with 96.5 for the 1971 class at St Paul High School. Both twins highlight a 12 year academic duel while holding leadership roles and scholarships. They are children of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hay.

Norwalk Jaycees Give 650 For New Recreation Center

Gilligan Orders Policy Overhaul and Lima Hospital Probe

Ohio Governor John Gilligan ordered a state investigation into brutality allegations at Lima State Hospital for the Criminally Insane and announced immediate policy changes. The plan includes staff increases, ending the no talking rule in Ward 21, repainting facilities to curb a dungeon feel, and relaxed dress rules as part of a humanization program led with Dr. Kenneth Gaver.

Norwalk EAS Plan Falters After Costly Survey Hurdle

The Extended Area Service plan to let Norwalk customers call Monroeville Greenwich New London and Wakeman toll free died after Northern Ohio Telephone Co canceled the required customer survey deemed too costly and time consuming. PUCO had conditionally approved the plan pending a broad public willingness to pay higher rates.
