A twister hit Columbus Georgia a city of 135000 injuring 11 and damaging the business district. The same storm also struck Phoenix City Alabama across the Chattahoochee River as violent winds accompanied a fast moving thunderstorm.

Six new trustees will be elected to the COED Board at a public meeting on June 1 at 7 30 p m. at the Holiday Inn. Nominated from Huron County are John F Ernosthausen Norwalk Kenneth C Buckley Wakeman and R Hollis Matherly Bellevue. From Erie County nominees include William A Derrick Sandusky Everett J Reeves Castalia Melvyn J Stauffer Sandusky James A Van Stone Sandusky and Albert E Wharff Milan.
Parsons Avenue residents plan to attend Norwalk City Council tonight to learn action on a sewage problem. Sewers and Sewage Treatment Committee led by Councilman Brian Schaffer will meet before the council session to review a report. Residents Warren Mills and Sam Giallombardo reported raw sewage on Parsons Street due to an inadequate Grove Street home septic system. Health officials say Grove Street lacks city sewers and that septic tanks cannot be replaced due to a 1956 city policy.
Unmanned Agena target rocket failed to reach orbit and vanished six minutes after liftoff at 11 15 a m EDT delaying Gemini 9 mission of astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan. Control reported we have lost the bird forcing at least a two week setback for the space spectacular. The Atlas booster ignited and carried the 7000 pound Agena into the sky but disappearance interrupted launch sequence.
A South Vietnamese lieutenant fired two pistol shots at a U.S. helicopter carrying Nguyen Cao Ky's area commander near a riot. An American machine gunner Pvt. James E. Fulton killed the officer, wounding six Vietnamese bystander soldiers. Maj. Gen. Huynh Van Cao and a U.S. Marine general escaped injury.
EHOVE board members discuss expanding the Joint Vocational School District from 13 districts to possibly 15 by adding Amherst Exempted Village Schools. Bellevue also eyed for future entry as the district awaits a new EHOVE superintendent.
The Norwalk Chamber of Commerce will appeal for more downtown parking facilities to Norwalk City Council. Wayne Kenney said attorney T. L. Paffenbarger will represent the Chamber. The group calls downtown parking inadequate and urges immediate action to buy space, considering the Masonic Lodge lot or Avalon Hotel site as possibilities while the council previously rejected the Masonic lot.
Willard city manager Keith Armstrong failed to win council approval for Albert D Ettore a North Fairfield school teacher as the summer recreation director for Willard park and swimming pool. The three month job paid 1200 dollars and the motion died for lack of a second after learning the post had not been advertised. The manager said it was the only application received and council asked him to check with superintendent M E Acocks about any interested teachers.
John A. Wonnell of Lakeside was elected president of the EHOVE Joint Board of Education with Theodore Kuns of Castalia as vice president. Five other members were sworn in by Judge James L. McCrystal. The board set monthly meetings for the year and named Firelands Community Bank in Huron as depositary for two years. It also designated the tri county vocational district as the EHOVE Joint Vocational School District.
A Greenwich man Walter D. Cochran 21 was admitted to Willard Hospital after his motorcycle spun out of control Monday when it struck a dog owned by Ernest Poth near Greenwich. The dog was killed. Patrolmen at the Norwalk State Highway Patrol Post reported the incident.
