Rural Ohio Farm Family Sees U S Doctor Shortage Drive Son to Mexico
Dorothy Fuldheim may invite a Norwalk area farmer's wife on Cleveland TV to discuss medical education. Her daughter Ginny, 26, studies medicine at Universidad Autonoma in Guadalajara with over 2,000 American students. She faced 20 to 30 U.S. applications but found few openings. Tuition and living costs total about 5,400 this year, with debts possibly reaching 30,000. Spanish lectures and bilingual textbooks mark the challenge of foreign study as she eyes a Fifth Pathway to continue in the United States post-graduation, while only 174 fifth pathway openings exist nationwide.
