Police report brakes failed on an auto owned by Mamie Cook of 67 N Maple St causing it to plow into Bailey Implement Co showroom. A new car inside was damaged. Cook was cited for failure to stop within an assured clear distance.
A 17 year old Willard High School student was ruled delinquent for a February telephone bomb threat and placed in Ohio Youth Commission custody. Judge Russell Antrim noted sentencing continued pending probation report after the school evacuated for 11 hours on February 8.
A Sunday 4 p.m. fire at a Northern Ohio Telephone storage garage damaged 20 large batteries and other equipment. Fire Chief Al Walters said 25 batteries were charging when a short started the blaze, acid ran under the overhead door, and smoke affected the building. Batteries valued at $200 to $250 each. Company officials warned the fire could have cut telephone service across New London if it reached other equipment rooms.
Norwalk High School students elected officers and council reps for the coming year. For the Class of 1972 Joe Arthur is president with Mike Simons as vice president while Michelle Manyak serves as treasurer and Pam Snyder as secretary. Senior council reps include Lorna Bartow Phil Charville Jim Holb Bill Mann and Mary Widman. The juniors elected Joe Turnley president Alexis Schaffer vice president Ellen Claytor treasurer and Karen Carpenter secretary with Tom Betz Bill Gerken Mac Hamilton Vaughan Rider and Jan Waugh as councilmen. Sophomore president Monica Berner vice president Dennis Harkness Skip Wilde treasurer Ann Carpenter secretary. Junior council reps Maureen Geoghan Sharon Prindle Wendell Rakosky Vickie Seitz and Carrie Simon. At Norwalk Junior High eighth grade officers name Ed Arlin president Priscilla Harkness vice president Tracey Buck secretary Lori Ramsey treasurer with student councilmen Susie Prindle Leslie Lee Tom Clark Dee Dee Wilson and Sally Gerken.
Greenwich mayor Lloyd E. Patton files for re election after taking out a petition on Saturday. The only other announced candidate is Councilman George R. Fetter, who has also filed a petition for the race.
Norwalk police add two new cruisers this week and plan a third car later in the month to reach four patrol vehicles for the first time. Downtown Dodge supplied two replacements for 1969 cruisers while Ebert and Son Motor Sales won the bid for the unmarked bronze car.
Partly sunny and mild today with a high near 70s and a 10 percent rain chance. Tonight brings increasing clouds and up to 60 percent Tuesday with showers, plus births marriages and deaths in Norwalk area records.
George C Scott won the Emmy for best single performance for The Price on NBC and accepted via Jack Cassidy who noted the gesture toward the Oscar. The Hallmark Hall of Fame led with eight awards including The Andersonville Trial for outstanding single program. All in the Family topped comedy honors with Jean Stapleton and The Odd Couple claimed best comedy actor and supporting wins.
Excavation starts on a $156000 12 unit apartment complex at Sycamore Hills on the town's west edge. Klingshirn Towner Inc Vermilion owns the site. The three story brick and cedar building will have four two bedroom units per floor with 24 parking spaces and a first floor laundry.
A Sandusky woman riding with Norwalk man Terry J. Goodsite was injured in a two car crash at League and Hester Streets. Loraine Ridebaugh received treatment at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital. Catherine M. Dohnal of Eastlake was charged with failure to yield. In a separate incident, William J. Theisen collided with Garth L. Geoghan on Christie Avenue.
City officials seek the source of a black oily residue complained of by resident Mrs. George Higgins of 211 East Main Street. She warned of filing a complaint with the Huron County Board of Health and the Ohio Tuberculosis Association after the filmy substance appeared on her house. Service Director Herbert Krogh collected a sample for analysis.
Preston Martin head of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board says mortgage rates have bottomed and may hold steady. He notes about 7 1/4 percent typical rates while savings and loans posted a record $7.4 billion gain early this year, supporting continued cheap money. He urges buyers to act now and confirms policy to keep funds flowing to keep rates low.
An electrical short occurred in power lines on the north side of Norwalk Junior High School early today. Damage described as minor. Fire and Electric Departments closed off the area and evacuated the school while power was out for about an hour. students missed less than half an hour of classes.
Martha Mitchell became the first cabinet wife to qualify as a guest at the White House Correspondents Association dinner. A hotel waitress refused to serve her and an invited UPI reporter without proper tickets, which were with an FBI agent guarding Mrs. Mitchell. Tickets were later found and meals served.
