Hope fades for missing after devastating Quebec landslide

Reports from ST JEAN VIANNEY indicate Quebec officials abandon hope of locating more than two dozen people missing in one of the province's worst landslides. A police spokesman called it a miracle if anyone else is found alive.

Truman Declines Congressional Medal of Honor

On the eve of his 87th birthday former President Harry S Truman rejects a bid in Congress to award him the Medal of Honor. He says he has done nothing to deserve such an award and notes the medal honors combat bravery, adding he does not accept the congressional honor.

Norwalk Trailer Fire Destroys Home Saving Woman And Dog

Mrs Gail Chase escaped with her daughter after a midday fire destroyed the Westwood Mobile Estates trailer. Fire Chief Kenneth Link said the blaze started near the gas stove and the dog died from smoke. Investigators could not determine a cause. Chase praised firefighters for their quick response and the community for support.

Three Charged With Narcotics In Willard

Willard police say three youths David L. Peeler Merle G. Gibson and Timothy D. Layne were arrested in the 200 block of Myrtle Avenue on narcotics possession and sale charges. Charges will be filed in Common Pleas Court. Gibson is a Willard High School student. Peeler and Layne are unemployed.

Actress Jane Fonda Cleared on Vitamins Found During Airport Arrest

Pills seized from Jane Fonda at Cleveland Hopkins Airport on drug smuggling charges were reported by the Cleveland Press to be vitamins she claimed. U.S. Attorney Marek declined to confirm or deny. Fonda, 32, was detained from Toronto, and 105 vials each held 40 pills were found in her luggage.

Automakers Say Clean Exhaust Goal Unachievable for 1976 Models

GM Ford American Motors and Volkswagen told EPA hearings that meeting the 90 percent nitrogen oxides reduction target for 1976 cars is not feasible. EPA will judge good faith and may grant a one year postponement if efforts are insufficient, comparing research spending to sales and profits.

Unemployment rose in April with Negro workers at 10 percent

The Labor Department reports April joblessness at 6.1 percent nationally and 10 percent for Negro workers the highest in over seven years. White unemployment held at 5.6 percent while overall employment rose. Average earnings and hours show small gains.
