U S Marines stormed a hilltop village through machinegun fire and routed Communist forces. They killed 29 enemy fighters in two battles. Heaviest combat unfolded at Xuan Ngoc village near Da Nang where a 13 man patrol met an entrenched force seven times larger.
Washington reports a growing clash over a nuclear powered surface fleet. Lawmakers accuse Defense Secretary McNamara of dragging his feet on expanding the nuclear navy while he argues the cost may not justify the gain in efficiency. In Leicester railway police report teenagers lying on tracks for kicks as trains pass over them. A conductor recalls a fatal near miss and the boy riding away afterward.
The Most Rev. George J. Behring bishop of Toledo led the consecration of the altar at the remodeled St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroeville Tuesday night. Assisting were Rev. Norbert Adelman and Rev. Norbert Howe. Attendees included two monsignori roughly 30 priests and nuns from Sacred Heart Seminary Shelby. Behring pontificated at a low Mass and gave a sermon before a 7 p.m. dinner in the parish social center.
Weather forecast calls for sunny cool day, clear and cool tonight with scattered frost in exposed areas. Fair and warmer Thursday with sunrise at 5 21 and sunset at 7 28. High Tuesday 57 and low 28. Births include a girl to Mr and Mrs Keith Jamerson of 209 Milan Ave and a boy to Mr and Mrs Waldean Risner of New London. New London School District bond issue and tax levy were defeated Tuesday with 498 yes and 688 no votes, losing in all precincts. Western Reserve two mill levy passed 224 to 184, approved in most precincts. Officials consider a new proposal focusing on expanding the current school complex.
Norwalk Junior High staged a mock gubernatorial primary as part of Ohio history classes with Frazier Reams Jr. winning 45 to 1 over Harry McIlwain while Gov. James Rhodes led the Republican slate with 38 votes. Dark-trimmed conventions featured go go girls, a rock band, and papier mache mascot elephants as students role played campaign teams. The statewide results mirrored the real race with Rhodes defeating William White and Eldon Brown upsetting Michael Entinger for treasurer. The lineup for November included Rhodes vs Reams for governor and other statewide offices in the repeated Republican-Democrat contests.
Thirty seven hundred Huron County voters cast ballots in the primary and special elections, 800 fewer than last year. Among them 2,249 Republicans and 1,147 Democrats participated in party primaries. 304 residents voted on issues only. Unofficial results.
Clifford F. Brown of Norwalk defeated Ben J. Goldman for the Ohio Supreme Court and will run against Republican Louis J. Schneider Jr. in the general election. Brown, a Sixth District Court of Appeals judge, led with 291,286 votes to Goldmans 169,912 as 13,106 of 13,254 precincts reported.
The Rev Warren Willke of Willard was hospitalized after a two car collision Tuesday morning outside the Hi Yo Golf Course. Willke 38 suffered a slight concussion and scalp cut and was cited for failure to yield the right of way.
Huron County results show Bernard F. Kean leading both parties in the Republican primary with 1,886 votes for auditor. Arthur Leak, also a Republican, earned 1,813 votes for county commissioner, while Democrat Lewis G. Heyman received 841 votes and advances to face Leak next fall. Probate Judge Russell T. Antrim garnered 1,786 votes.
City council approved an emergency ordinance boosting hourly wages by 40 cents for the electrical distribution department to prevent linemen loss. The vote follows demands from four other departments for raises similar to a prior increase. Ted Heller, head of electrical distribution, got a $500 raise, while a $600 request for Public Service Director Morley Price was postponed. All city employees had previously received a 12.5 percent raise on January 1.
