The Garfield Elementary School football team, without their players, faced the Highland Tigers and won 10-7. The unusual matchup saw only the cheerleaders present for Garfield step in to play and secure the victory.
A 22 year old college graduate was found guilty of mailing a bomb that killed Lorain school teacher Orville E. Stifel II. The federal jury of 7 men and 5 women deliberated 17 hours over three days before sentencing him to life in prison. Judge Kalbfleisch declared the punishment for the rest of his natural life.
Cairo Illinois mayor Lee P Stenzel tells a Springfield committee the city is at the bottom of the economic barrel in relation to racial disorders. In Toledo police find the body of four year old Stacy Simpson strangled with a red dress, discovered in a garage after a missing persons report.
Washington UPI Republicans from here to the GOP Governor's Conference at Lexington stood up for Ohio Gov. James A. Rhodes against Life Magazine allegations. Sen. William Saxbe said he would have known if Rhodes faced misconduct while he was state attorney general. Life accuses Rhodes of misusing campaign funds and hiding income.
Ohio Senator John H Weeeks proposes raising the cigarette tax from 7 to 10 cents to fund the Educational Development Fund. The measure would mark the third tax hike in two years, following a five to seven cent increase previously and now a further rise to ten cents.

An Ohio doctor warns against spider phobia after two northeastern Ohio hospital patients were bitten by brown recluse spiders. Todd Quester, 5, in a coma, shows deterioration, while Diane Karcher, 18, of Canton improves and doctors dispute a direct link between the bite and meningitis.

City and county officials say a bid from one of two firms to run the Norwalk Huron County Airport has been accepted with formal announcement due Saturday. The chosen bidder will be notified as talks for a contract proceed toward a council vote next Tuesday.
Education and Recreation Sub committee member William Conway reported the lease on the proposed Glover Avenue site has expired slowing a playground project. Park and Recreation Board seeks a new lease while owners show interest in selling. The committee also noted white supremacist materials left at Norwalk homes including The Thunderbolt from Savannah and Jack Crites campaign material from Akron.
The United Auto Workers rejected a proposed contract on Thursday prompting a second day of strikes at Superior Coach Corp in Norwalk. About 170 employees walked out after the three year contract expired at midnight Wednesday. Federal mediator William Smith from Detroit said he would seek new talks with company and union leaders. Local President Sherald Morgan declined to comment on voting figures.
An 18 year old, Richard K. Rowland of 161 First St., was driving west in a construction zone seven miles east of the Norwalk Sandusky interchange when his pickup veered off the left side and struck a guardrail. He suffered a minor injury to his right leg and was treated at the scene at 5 45 this morning.
An Illinois truck driver Charles H. Wolf 34 of Carpentersville was killed on the Ohio Turnpike five miles west of Fremont when his tanker collided with a car. Ronald F. Bezon 28 of Alliance drove the car involved. The tanker carried soybean oil from Bellevue.
Robert Gustafson 27 died after stabbing his mother and facing police in Omaha Nebraska. He had returned from California saying he wanted to quit drugs and shouted I’m an LSD as officers fired, ending his life nine hours after arrival.
