Premier Alexei Kosygin stood atop Lenin's Tomb for the May Day parade as his wife Klaudia Kosygin died of cancer at the same time.
The Louisville Courier Journal and the Milwaukee Journal won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for meritorious public service. Edward Albee won for drama and Bernard Malamud for fiction. In Cleveland, Jack Kralick, ex Indians pitcher, was injured in a crash hours after being sold to the New York Mets.
London sources report Prime Minister Harold Wilson has cabinet approval for a new bid to join the European Common Market. He will brief the House of Commons on the announcement.
Five day old prince of Holland presented to nation in Utrecht Hospital ceremony. Parents name him Alexander as Prime Minister Piet de Jong and Mayor C J de Ranitz attend with Louis de Beel. Prince born by cesarean section describes the first male born to the House of Orange in over a century.
Millions of housewives turned to powdered milk and margarine or traveled long distances after Chicago area dairies locked out truck drivers. Stores imposed one to a customer limits on all dairy products and rationed whole milk substitutes.
Showers end this evening then partial clearing and much cooler conditions. Overnight low 40s, Monday high 71 and low 59 with sunrise at 6 24 am and sunset at 7 26 pm. Births record two Norwalk area boys and a New London infant. deaths include Bertha Saladin and Huldah Speers.
Huron County CAC weighs running an anti-poverty program without federal funds. They question high overhead and limited benefits from the federal program and may seek local or state resources. Regional OEO officials advocate staying with Erie County. no decision reached after the Monday meeting.
Washington announces withdrawal of 35 000 military personnel and four combat squadrons from West Germany with start expected next January. About 28 000 combat troops and 7 000 support personnel to depart under a plan to reduce the dollar drain, NATO involved, Bonn to buy U S securities and military gear to offset costs.
Clevite Corporation of Cleveland and Servel Inc of Freeport announce a merger in principle valued at about $22 million in cash and stock. Details remain to be worked out and approval by directors and stockholders is required. Clevite makes bearings and suspension parts with a Milan plant. Servel operates five US and Canadian plants including Burgess Battery Division and holds 55 percent of Sonotone Corp.
In Huron County two separate accidents killed a horse and a pony. Linus Mahl reported a horse ran onto Ohio 2 injuring no one. A Shetland pony owned by William Marett was struck on Ohio 162, killing the animal. the driver, Wayne Pylant, escaped injury. A two year old girl fell from a car but was treated for head abrasions. A new Ohio State Patrol patrolman, Charles Campbell, was assigned to the Norwalk post after graduation.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Mamie Eisenhower boarded a special railroad car in San Bernardino for a cross country trip back to their Gettysburg farm. About 150 well wishers saw the couple depart as the two car train left the Santa Fe siding.
A look back shows 1965 rivalry in Norwalk with GOP four for council at large and a mayoral path via Harold Finch after Michael Rice withdrawal. Richard D. Cunningham had defeated Finch earlier. This year four Republicans vie for three at large seats led by incumbents Hakes Liedorff and Saladin with Grant Walls challenging. No Democratic primary today.
In Norwalk, H otter Ward and Brian Schaffer unseat incumbent William Comer in the fourth ward while Frederick F. Waugh faces Henry E. Young in a Republican bid for city solicitor. In the second ward Russell E. Cunningham seeks re election against Domenic E. Coletta. The Berlin Milan school bond issue of 1.4 million tops the ballot. Voter turnout is light with about 4 500 ballots cast in 1965 primary and special elections. Republicans tally 832 to 305 for Democrats.
Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu wed in Las Vegas and began a month long honeymoon at Presley’s Las Palmas home in Palm Springs California. The couple, both Memphis natives, plan to live in Memphis after marrying six months ago.
Huron County disassociates from Erie County in the war on poverty declaring reconciliation impossible. Federal officials warn limited funding and urge local and state resources as budget cuts shift program needs. Three options are offered: run own program, merge funds with a neighboring CAC, or join an adjacent CAC.
