A juror in the Calley court martial was hospitalized with stomach pains but released to resume deliberations. Maj. Harvey G. Brown, 33, Amarillo Texas, spent about 90 minutes at Martin Army Hospital before returning to the sequestration barracks.
Navy Secretary John H. Chafee testified before the Senate that drug abuse in the Navy and Marines is out of control and racial tension is rising at an alarming rate. He admitted the drug problem is not fully under control. In London an inquest heard an 87-year-old woman weighed 42 pounds at death, pathologist citing possible starvation.
Western Sunbathing Association asked California officials to reserve a San Clemente beach section for nude swimming near President Nixon's villa. The group cited a Parks and Recreation Department response calling the plan out of policy and questioned the idea of nudity on Nixon's beach. In Torrance, Donald J. Henry was sentenced to six years to life after admitting he spiked potato chips with LSD at a singles party, sickening fifty attendees and hospitalizing eight.

Census figures show federal taxes scale with income but state and local taxes are regressive. The poorest group under $2,000 pays about 50 percent of its earnings in taxes, while those over $50,000 pay around 6.7 percent in state and local taxes. Overall most families pay roughly 30 percent of income in taxes.

Social Security beneficiaries will receive first checks reflecting a 10 percent monthly benefit increase on June 3 with May benefits. Robert M. Ball says June 3 payments cover May, while January through April adjustments will arrive later in June. Checks are mailed automatically and no action is needed by recipients. Ball notes refiguring all benefit amounts will take just over a month.
