Casper Junior College of Wyoming, ranked No 1, defeated Western Texas 61-57 in a national tournament first round. Duane Traves scored eight points in the second half as point guard helping steady the team. Kevin Sprewser powered late with three dunks and 14 points to seal the win. Casper shot 23 of 54 from the field and 15 of 22 free throws while Western Texas went 25 of 53 and 7 of 9 from the line.

Heathcote Named Big Ten Coach of the Year
Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote topped Midwest writers and broadcasters to win the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Heathcote earned 592 points on 108 of 132 ballots as the Spartans claimed the conference title with a 24-4 record and 15-3 in league play. Indiana’s Bobby Knight finished second with 253 points. The Spartans beat Providence 77-63 in the NCAA first round and advance to face Western Kentucky in Dayton.
