Author Norman Mailer receives the 20th annual National Book Award for Arts and Letters for The Armies of the Night. The prize was announced at the National Book Committee Convention held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
Cuyahoga County Commissioners enacted a one half per cent sales tax to be added to the four per cent state tax starting June 1. The American Independent Party pledged to circulate petitions to place the tax on the May ballot requiring about 40 000 signatures, election board officials said.
A 12 year old boy killed his father after an argument about his mother being threatened with a butcher knife. Police ruled the death as justifiable homicide and said the youth fired at his father at the kitchen table. The boy claimed to have acted to protect his mother.
The Reflector's Who's Who contest honors three Norwalk residents for most accurately matching 36 business owner ads and pictures. William Rarick won $50 and works at Bob Meyers Chevrolet. Mrs. Ray Perry Jr. won second prize. Otto Perry won $15.
George Wallace told supporters the American Independent Party will continue to operate and would return in the 1972 presidential race. Separately, Paris saw about nine million French workers strike for up to 12 percent pay hikes amid inflation concerns.

James Earl Ray arrived at Tennessee State Prison in Nashville to serve a life sentence with a 30 year loneliness term. He will occupy cell No. 4 in maximum security, with limited exits for illness, showers, and exercise, and will be housed alongside death row on an 11 cell corridor. Warden Lake Russell and Corrections Commissioner Harry Avery said Ray will be isolated and monitored as he transfers through guarded doors and corridors.
UPI reports Senator George McGovern's Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs heard migrants in Immokalee Florida describe hunger. About 200 workers mostly Mexican and Negro attended as Mrs Marcello Longoria told of a week without food and medical costs. Local officials cited cost and duty concerns delaying food aid programs.
The Norwalk City Board of Education meets at 8 tonight in the school administration building to discuss a proposed revision of kindergarten eligibility. The current rule allows five year olds on or before Oct 31. the change would set Sept 30 as the cutoff to align with Ohio Department of Education standards.
