Thieves broke into Marion P. Cronin’s west side home and carried off 400 000 pennies and 20 000 dimes, about $6 000, mostly in coin wrappers for a deposit expected today. The loss occurred while the Cronins were at work.

Two rescuers entered the salt mine shaft in Morgan City Louisiana to locate 21 men trapped since midnight Tuesday They found 80 feet of water in the shaft and heard a diesel engine but detected no sign of the missing workers The mine operator Cargill Inc cited smoke and carbon monoxide in the shaft as factors.
