Free Will Baptist Rev. Fred Taylor said his petition backing a Christmas Bible reading by an Apollo 8 astronaut has reached 500000 signatures. He plans to deliver the appeal Friday to Paul Haney at the Houston Manned Spacecraft Center, arguing that no atheists speak for the country.
Morristown police found three 4 year old boys in a destroyed Assumption School classroom after a patrolman noticed a light on. The children stood among overturned tables broken phonograph records scattered games and splashed paint. Police said the boys appeared to have no clear reason for the vandalism and speculated they might have been spanked at home.

Treasury Secretary Kennedy and Budget Director Mayo told Congress the 10 per cent surcharge must be kept beyond its June 30 expiration due to current economic conditions. Mayo said the outlook requires extension of both the surcharge and excises.

Two Apollo 9 astronauts James McDivitt and Russell Schweickart moved through a 32 inch tunnel from the command ship to the lunar lander Spider for the first US transfer between craft in orbit. Schweickart reported nausea but recovered as the nine hour test began. David Scott remained aboard the command ship as the live TV feed showed the Spider cockpit in orbit.
Huron County Sheriff John Borgia and the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association oppose a bill passed by the Ohio House that would let sheriffs mayors and municipal executives ask the governor to call out the Highway Patrol during riots. They warn of authority conflicts and say they would drop opposition if mayors and municipal executives were removed.
Rep. Ethel G. Swanbeck proposes hiring an outside firm to audit Ohio welfare operations. She voiced frustration at receiving 50 to 60 welfare letters weekly and said an independent study could reveal true failures in the program.
Richard Enzor wins permits for a 100000 dollar Westwood Mobile Estates trailer park on 11 acres south of Washington Street in Norwalk. He aims a high class park with 60 by 80 foot lots underground utilities and a nine-channel tower as residents contest the project due to sewer concerns. The Enzors plan to live on site and manage the 69 homes themselves.
