City Temperature Holds Steady Amid Heat Wave

Weather notes show yesterday's high 93 degrees, 9 shy of 102 on June 26 1952. City pool attendance marked brisk with total turnout of 1 013, mirroring heat driven activity and a year ago high of 88 degrees.

Centaur rocket fails to reach orbit in critical test

UPI reports the Centaur upper stage shut down two minutes early failing to achieve orbital speed for the unmanned lunar mission next year. The 46 foot stage tumbled and burned in Earth's atmosphere as a test flight ends in setback.

Weather Update With Lake Erie Winds And Skies

Mostly fair Tuesday with scattered thundershowers west in late afternoon. Wednesday partly cloudy with widely scattered thundershowers. Highs 85 to 96, lows 65 to 72. Lake Erie winds shift from 8-12 knots this morning to 1-16 this afternoon and 17-21 tonight. Plus licenses issued for four individuals and three births reported in Willard, Plymouth and New London.

Norwalk Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks Planned

Norwalk prepares a full day of family festivities at the Huron County Fair Grounds with a morning parade from the Post Office to Benedict Ave and Norwood Ave. Six churches ring bells as Let Freedom Ring begins. A noon cannon signals parade start followed by trophies baton twirling and a grandstand program with a water fight by five fire departments, an Army Band concert, and a fireworks display after dark by the V F W. Concessions include Moose Lodge and Holy Name Society offerings.

Unemployment Here Lowest In 7 Years

Unemployment in Huron County fell to its lowest level in at least seven years in June. Norwalk office records show 167 claims the week of June 20, the lowest since 1958. Ohio state totals and county payrolls reached record levels in late 1963.

Rt Gen William Saxbe ruled counties and townships may regulate gas and oil drilling by zoning if not conflicting with state law. Municipalities may impose oil and gas production rules with fees used only for regulatory purposes and not excessive.

Plane crashes into homes killing two children in Haverhill

A pilotless F86 jet crashed in a residential area on Lackney Street shortly after midnight. The craft plowed into three houses and parked cars, killing 11-year-old Pamela Gifford and 8-year-old Todd Gifford and also killing their dog. The pilot parachuted to safety, landing in a tree.
