National Guard Quiets Washington After Riots

In Washington D C crowds of Negroes were dispersed with tear gas by police and National Guardsmen. A 9 p.m. curfew was ordered as 1 500 police and 1 400 guardsmen moved into the area around 14th and U Streets N W. One looter was shot in a liquor store and several policemen were injured. Authorities began to reduce security as tensions eased.

Railroad union talks continue after midnight deadline

Chicago negotiators for the railroads and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, 140,000 members, worked past a midnight cutoff in a bid to avert a nationwide strike. After 11 hours of talks they recessed at about 4 a.m. EDT and planned to resume later, time not set.

Beating Death in Oak Harbor Shocks Town

Frances Boboroski a 73 year old deaf mute is found beaten to death in her Oak Harbor Ohio home. Sheriff Byron Hetrick says a brother was outside and reentered as an unknown suspect left through the front. Witnesses saw a man flee the residence.

Five US helicopters crash near Saigon killing 38 personnel

In a freak morning accident near Saigon, five American combat helicopters crashed. A collision among two UH1D choppers and the destruction of a third killed 12 US crewmen and 19 Thai soldiers who were being ferried to an offensive against guerrillas threatening Saigon.

North Fairfield Hit by Wind and Rain Storm

A severe wind and rain storm struck North Fairfield early Monday afternoon causing widespread damage. Electric and telephone service were interrupted for hours with outages on North Main, West Main and East Ashtabula streets. A pole on North Main was broken and fire crews responded to a fire sparked by a limb on a hot wire behind a gas station. Urban sections faced blocked streets and downed wires while Norwalk and New London reports noted lightning strikes and minor damage.

Racial tensions blamed for Ohio prison riot

Officials cited possible racial overtones in a riot at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus that caused 3 to 4 million dollars in damage and injured eight guards and one prisoner. National guards and troopers secured the site as inmates damaged property, seized keys, and threatened staff.

Pope Abolishes Bishop Thrones and Ceremonial Traditions

Pope Paul VI announced sweeping reforms to simplify Catholic rites by abolishing bishop thrones and reducing ceremonial paraphernalia. The changes, set to take effect Sept. 8, include new vestment procedures and eliminating genuflection before bishops, with acolytes handling lavabo. Decrees dated June 21 explain the motu proprio nature of the reforms.
