Rhodes Rejects Welfare Increase Amid Ohio Surplus Debate

Gov. James A. Rhodes indicated welfare payments will not be raised despite calls from groups marching from Cleveland to Columbus. He noted the state’s 28 million dollar surplus cannot cover existing needs including schools and mental health. Rhodes questioned a special session and suggested meetings could occur with welfare officials. He also urged federal action on Lake Erie pollution and criticized St. Lawrence Seaway tolls, arguing Ohio loses on returns from federal waterways.

Rites Held For Victim Of Shooting

Funeral services were held for Woodrow Duvall 46 of Sandusky who died after being shot in his home. His son Danny 16 is held in Erie County Jail charged with first degree murder with decisions on trial as adult or juvenile due next week.

Two Women Injured In Norwalk Monroeville Crash

A Norwalk woman and another elderly passenger were hospitalized after a two car collision on U S 250 near Milan. Catherine Jenkins and Doris Ruffing were treated, with Ruffing admitted. Wanda Boswell cited for failing to stop within the clear distance. A Monroeville resident, Bessie Miller, was also admitted after being struck on private property by a Lasch Furniture Co truck driven by Jack Schafer.

Man Faces Shooting Charge in Greenwich Cable Incident

Darrell Music, 22, of Greenwich, charged with malicious destruction of property for shooting a telephone cable in the Greenwich area. The incident was reported by a Northern Ohio Telephone Co. employee to Huron County prosecutor Bernard Freeman, who filed a bill of information. Music was released on a $500 personal recognizance bond.

Mansfield man posts bond in Norwalk theft case

Posts bond Rital Shoulders, 24, of Mansfield, charged with grand larceny in connection with the theft of 160 dollars from a Norwalk service station Tuesday night. He was released from Huron County jail.

Milan Man Sues Over 1965 Intersection Crash

Edward F. Fitch of Milan filed a 7500 dollar suit in Huron County Common Pleas Court against Lawrence E. Pete and William Dauch. He claims a June 29 1965 collision at the North West and Jefferson Streets intersection in Norwalk. Fitch alleges Pete negligent as he drove a truck west on Jefferson while Fitch rode north on West Street.
