Henry Crutchfield 84, terminal cancer patient, is jailed on suspicion of attempted murder after shooting his mentally retarded son William 44 twice in the face. The son survived. Crutchfield claimed the act was a mercy killing as he also faces a looming death.
A crowd of nearly a dozen people, from varied ages and builds, performed the English walk along Norwalk’s Main Street as a publicity stunt for the July Fourth celebration. Organizers plan an English walk race around the fairgrounds oval with participants from the courthouse and city hall.
Kathy Jo Cordes 21 of Cincinnati won the swimsuit contest and Deborah Ann Pellegrini 24 of Kenton won the talent contest during final preliminary judging for Miss Ohio. Cordes, Miss University of Cincinnati, a Bengals cheerleader and 1974 UC nursing graduate, and Pellegrini, Miss West Central Ohio, a 1972 Bowling Green State University graduate, will join 25 other contestants in tonight's final judging for the Miss Ohio title.
Weather forecast shows a shower risk with possible thunderstorms mainly this afternoon and evening. Highs upper 60s to lower 70s, lows upper 40s to lower 50s, cooler Sunday with highs in the low to mid 60s and a 20 to 30 percent precipitation probability. Birth notices list four families from Stower Giehll Ebert and Salyer with newborns in Willard and surrounding areas.
Indiana Republicans passed a resolution praising President Nixon and nominated Indianapolis Mayor Richard G. Lugar to run against Senator Birch Bayh. Lugar won 1,710 votes to 330 for Rep. Earl Landgrebe, promising a campaign to highlight Nixon and Kissinger's foreign policy and administration achievements.
New York mayor Abe Beame and three aides escaped injury when a police helicopter carrying them to Kennedy Airport ditched in New York harbor due to mechanical failure. Pilot Lt. Theodore Cavooris said engine efficiency fell and a return flight was impossible because of a thunderstorm. The craft landed safely in the water off Bush Terminal Brooklyn with Beame, Deputy Mayor Judah Gribett, Det. George Tebeau, and the pilot aboard.
Newalk Students of the Maycly Waite Dance Academy will present their annual recital at 8 tonight at Norwalk High School. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Two Walt Disney films Alice In Wonderland and Stormy will be shown at 8 tonight and at 2 and 8 p.m. Sunday at Towne and Country.
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat sent an urgent letter to President Nixon urging pressure on Israel to halt raids on Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Israeli forces moved to seal the Lebanon border as attacks killed and wounded many, with competing casualty figures and strong regional tensions.
Mayors from neighboring communities join Gov. John Gilligan at a 7 to 7 30 p m reception hosted by Mayor Wayne Goodsite at the Huron County Administration building. The 7 30 p m Town Meeting follows with Gov Gilligan answering citizen questions, open to the public.
Former Vice President Spiro Agnew and his family have relocated to a split level house in a Severn River area development outside Annapolis Maryland. The Agnews bought the home from Colin F McGowen for 125000 after selling their Washington area house for 320000 about 130000 more than their initial purchase price.
A Buckeye Girls State delegate, Sally Reynolds, was reprimanded for distributing pamphlets from a group protesting the exclusion of handicapped girls from the mock government program. A protest and meeting with the Columbus School Board followed, with officials denying the admonitions used.
