The Senate Banking Committee wrapped hearings on Lockheed’s financial crisis as chairman Sen. John Sparkman predicted a government loan guarantee to avert bankruptcy. The forecast was echoed by undecided Sen. Robert Packwood who backed the proposal from the outset.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird told reporters he has ordered the Pentagon to begin declassifying papers on the origins of the Vietnam War. He said studies prepared at the Pentagon will be released in a stepped up effort, including previously top secret documents.
Frank E. Fitzsimmons was named head of the Teamsters Union with the blessing of his predecessor James R. Hoffa and congratulations from President Nixon. Hoffa, jailed for jury tampering, steps down after leading the 2 million member union, paving the way for Fitzsimmons election.
Ohio Attorney General William J. Brown cautions residents about pool installers using bait and switch tactics. Advertisements promise low cost below ground pools but agents push buyers toward inferior above ground models and higher priced products.
President Nixon asked U S doctors in Atlantic City to marshal a program against drug abuse across all states and medical societies. He warned physicians may overprescribe and called for a unified medical effort to fight the drug menace as part of national health campaigns.

Peter Lemon recalls combat in Vietnam under marijuana influence and earning the Medal of Honor for actions on April 1, 1970 near the Cambodian border. He describes wounds, hand to hand combat, and carrying a wounded comrade to safety while continuing to fight. Lemon says most Americans in Vietnam used marijuana and laments postwar social status.
The New London school board plans a recount after a 421 to 425 loss on a three mill levy. The motion passed unanimously to file within 10 days and costs are $10 per precinct unless machine error is found.
Norwalk, July 1, pending weather, will spray for mosquitoes. Service Director Herbert Krogh said many residents asked to spray after few opposed due to bee harm. Snyder's Flying Service of Fostoria will apply malathion.
Washington UPI reports the House passed and sent to the Senate a bill to stop advertising or sales promotions urging customers to mail in bottle caps plastic lids and other pieces that could damage postal machinery.
The Norwalk Community Action Commission asks for donations to buy municipal swimming pool passes for children whose families cannot afford them. Director Leslie Harper says passes will go to children aged six to ten and that donations of any amount are welcome.
Ronald Rogers of Cleveland for the Ohio Right to Life Society told Norwalk residents that pro abortionists seek to control family size and may force abortions. He noted two bills pending in the Ohio Assembly and urged legislators to act against abortion. A hearing was set for 7 30 tonight and 7 30 p m June 29 at the Statehouse in Columbus for opponents. Rogers substituted for Dr Anthony Lezzi who cancelled. About a dozen attended and some want to form a Norwalk chapter.
Four pickets lined the Superior Coach Division plant of Sheller Globe Corp as a wildcat strike entered its fifth day. Production halted since 11:30 a.m. Thursday. A court order limited pickets to four with a two per entrance. An injunction against Local 1379 of the UAW followed. Workers did not return after being ordered back Monday. A permanent injunction hearing is set for 10 a.m. Thursday in Huron County Common Pleas Court.
The California Carpenters union and the Northern California Home Builders Association reach a three year contract raising wages to 10.85 dollars per hour. The deal increases base pay by 1.80 per hour and fringe benefits by 65 cents. The old agreement paid 8.34 dollars an hour and expired June 16. The AGC of California criticizes the settlement as fueling inflation.
The Norwalk City Charter Commission completes its ward meetings with a 7 30 p m session at St Marys School in the fourth ward. Wayne Milbourne of Painesville will discuss charter ideas for Norwalk. Next week includes talks by David W Rowlinson or Eugene Kramer and a Wednesday session with local officials and the charter chairman stresses public access.
