Smoking may aid some patients with serious disease says doctor

Dr. Sheldon Cohen of Atlanta told the AMA that some patients with serious illness may be better off smoking rather than quitting. He warned that those forced to quit can develop severe emotional disorders, suggesting the habit persists even as health declines.

McCarthy caps Ohio stop seeks delegates for Dem convention

Senator Eugene J. McCarthy urged about 300 college age supporters at Burke Lakefront Airport to help win Ohio delegates for the Democratic National Convention. He asked them to get the word through to the Ohio delegation. The event drew a youth crowd in Cleveland.

Former mental patient rescued from 150 foot water tower

In Greenville Ohio a former mental patient spent about 25 hours atop a 150 foot water tower before being lowered safely in a crane bucket late Monday night. Reporter Jack Willey aided and rode down with her.

Eastwood Village Fire Crews Respond Without Fires

Residents misread a routine trash burn and a planned controlled burn as fires. Firefighters arrived twice to Eastwood Village after black smoke was seen on Old State Road, but no flames were found. Security kept watch as Senator Eugene J. McCarthy spoke outdoors.

Head Start Funds Approved for New London Area Programs

Emerson Cole of the Huron CAC announced federal funds totaling 29300 and 4500 in non federal money for Head Start and a day care program serving New London Willard Perkins. Programs target 45 pre kindergarten children with sites teachers and transport to be arranged before start. Cole plans to brief the bi county board and submit a personnel plan revision tonight.

Ex-Convict Charged With Forgery In Payroll Check Theft

A 40 year old ex convict Jesse C Jennings is wanted on a warrant for forgery and parole violation after nine payroll checks totaling 1285 were cashed using a machine at Saginaw Wire Products Inc. The plant reported a missing petty cash box of 167 and Jennings had taken vacation starting June 2 and did not return. The case links to a prior theft at Price Construction Co and a 112 check cashed at Kroger. Investigation by Norwalk and Huron County Bank officials led to the arrest warrant issued by Prosecutor Bernard Freeman.

Republican candidate reports $122 campaign expense

Richard Garner, a GOP county commissioner hopeful, disclosed spending $122 in the primary. The other four GOP candidates had filed their expense reports with the Huron County Board of Elections previously. The deadline for all reports is 4 p.m. Friday.
