Keys To Good Rhubarb

Ohio State University extension horticulturist E C Wittmeyer says rhubarb needs well drained soil with organic matter. Apply manure or organic matter a year before planting and three to four pounds of fertilizer before planting. After growth begins a nitrogen rich side dress may be advised, placed one foot from the plant at one pound per 100 feet of row. Rhubarb is grown from divisions of old crowns with one strong bud per division. Break damaged roots and shorten long roots before spring planting.

Proper management of soil and water resources

Efficient crop production depends on integrated soil and water resource management as yields rise. Coordinated practices by managers and farmers aim to balance soil health with water use to sustain productivity.

Resistant Varieties

Development of crop varieties resistant to specific insects and diseases remains a focus of ongoing scientific work. Researchers continually test and breed strains to improve plant resilience and reduce reliance on chemical controls.
