Trade Deadline Passes Without Major Bombshells in MLB
The deadline passed with few blockbuster moves as minor deals dominated. Yankees acquired Gary Thomasson from Oakland and Jay Johnstone plus Bob Brown from Philadelphia. Bernie Carbo went to Cleveland as Boston sought value before the cutoff. Giants added Metzger, McGlothen, and Dwyer in three trades. Phillies reshuffled pitchers by sending Garber to Atlanta for Ruthven. Twins owner Calvin Griffith balked at Carew bids, planning to wait until December. California considered dealing Nolan Ryan but backed off amid cash offers.
