Helicopters Collide Killing Eighteen At Fort Benning

Two UH11D Huey helicopters collided during a training flight at Fort Benning. All 18 aboard died including two crews and six infantrymen. The crash halted bystanders and responders removed bodies through swampy terrain to the Army base. The Army linked the victims to the 11th Air Assault Division and 1st Battalion 38th Infantry, with crews from the 227th Assault Helicopter Battalion. Authorities cited a sudden collision rather than drifting together as the cause.
