Watergate figures must start prison terms on June twenty second

UPI reports Judge Sirica indicated John Mitchell and H R Haldeman should begin serving their sentences June 22 for involvement in the Watergate cover up. He noted no Supreme Court ruling yet on Nixon aides appeal, but that date seems right to him.

GM extends warranty on Chevymobiles despite swap halt

GM said it will continue indefinitely its extended three year or 36000 mile warranty on the engine transmission and rear axle for any of the 87000 1977 Oldsmobiles Buicks and Pontiacs that used Chevrolet engines. The swap offer ended except in New York State.

Former county Democratic chief Gosney jailed for license fee theft

In Columbiana County Ohio former Democratic Chairman Donald Gosney was sentenced to one to five years in prison and ordered to repay more than seventy thousand dollars in stolen license plate fees. Judge Richard Kennedy denied probation saying public respect for the legal system requires incarceration.

Parents sue to block graduation over illiterate student

George and Alice Garrett sue Broward County school board in Broward Circuit Court on behalf of their 19 year old daughter Elizabeth to stop her high school graduation claiming inadequate education. The suit seeks a court ruling on whether Elizabeth received the required education and alleges negligence in handling her needs.

Mandel Trials Begins as Governor Returns from Court

Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel, recovering from a stroke, left a federal courtroom with his bodyguards after the first day of a 23 count mail fraud and racketeering trial. Mandel said he was exhausted and tired as he faces retrial with five codefendants on charges delayed by his hospitalization.

Ohio House OKs Prizes Beyond Cash for Lottery

Columbus Ohio The Ohio Lottery Commission won House approval to award trips homes cars and other prizes in addition to cash Lottery Director Gerald Patronite said goods and services could be offered under existing law but needs Senate approval. Patronite favored broader prize plans and testified before the House two months earlier. The bill moves to the Senate.

Chicago Flanks Half 8th Grade Read-Back Policy

Chicago district plans to hold about 675 of 1,289 eighth graders back for not reaching a 6th grade reading level. District 9 Superintendent Albert Briggs says he is cracking down on low reading scores and will gate graduation, with most held students sent to remedial centers or over-age programs. He remains hopeful overall reading scores will improve.

Ellett Expected to Retire From Huron County Health

Clarence Ellett deputy health commissioner of Huron County for 24 years may announce his retirement or resignation at today's Board of Health meeting. He is 64 and lives on Old State Road in Norwalk.

Palm Stricken At Cleveland Clinic

Huron County Commissioner Roy Palm is in the coronary unit at Cleveland Clinic recovering from a heart attack. He was admitted to Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital May 23 and transferred to Cleveland Clinic for open heart surgery, which was postponed after his heart attack. He may be released from the coronary unit later this week but remains a patient at the clinic.

Norwalk GOP held primary for council candidates

Five veteran Republicans and two newcomers seek four at large seats in Norwalk with incumbents Richard D. Cunningham L William Ream and Morgan E Jones joined by Catherine M Murray and Bernard L McClure. Murray and McClure campaign door to door while incumbents tout records and tax stance. City council pay is $80 monthly.

Fireworks Factory Planned Near Fitchville

Mrs. Edward Ackerman of Royal Fireworks and Displays Co. announces a two building plant off Prospect Road two miles east of U S 250 in Fitchville will produce Class B and Class C fireworks. The Ohio permit was approved in December and four semi trucks are at the site. The firm employs four people.

Norwalk Sells Police Dog for 300 Dollars

Norwalk has sold its only police dog King to Willard Police Department for 300 dollars on May 19. The sale follows a recommendation by Police Chief Lawrence Hilson due to the dog’s declining ability and training costs. The Willard handler Sgt. Thomas Ludban now staffs Willard’s first police dog named Sam.
