Nixon Pushes Immediate Move To Metric System

The Nixon administration urged immediate steps to switch the United States to the metric system. Commerce Secretary Maurice R. Stans said a full changeover to meters and liters should occur within ten years to replace yards miles and quarts. The U.S. remains the world’s only major nation not to adopt the metric standard.

Tragic Hunting Accident Claims 14 Year Old

Charles D Herner aged 14 of 144 E Main St died from a gunshot wound received during a woodchuck hunt with his grandfather Earl Herner 69 south of Peru. The rifle discharged injuring him in the back of the head around 7 25 pm. He was taken to Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital and died at 1 40 am. Coroner ruled accident. Funeral details and survivors listed. Also UPI reports Washington inflation and deficit figures with Taft reacting to Stans forecast. Trade deficit for six months reaches 803 million dollars. Government spending exceeds income by 23 2 billion dollars. Leading indicators slip 0 5 percent in June.

Ohio University Publishes Book On Alden Years

Ohio University spent 21500 to publish a hard binding book detailing Vernon R. Alden’s eight year presidency. Two thousand copies of the 239 page volume were printed, titled Ohio University and the Alden Years, covering 1962 to 1969.

Norwalk Receives Final Flood Aid Check

Norwalk today received the last federal reimbursement for July 1969 flood damage. A $117,622 check was presented to Service Director Herbert Krogh, bringing total federal flood aid to $242,334. Major portion funds the street fund with $69,173 while other allocations include the general fund, park and recreation, fire, police, and electric and water funds.

Milan Girl Injured After Fall From Horse At Track

Vicki Kramer, 16, a top rider and Edison High School student, was critically injured Wednesday afternoon when thrown from her Appaloosa Woodhills Red Hawk at the former Shamrock Downs track. She remains in Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital with a fractured skull, fractured rib, and spleen removal surgery. Her father James Kramer reports she crawled to safety and the horse stayed by her side.

19 year old seeks Monroeville mayor post amid apathy

Joseph P. Meyer, 19, is the only candidate to file petitions for Monroeville mayor with the Aug. 4 deadline. Meyer, a 1970 Monroeville High School graduate and Norfolk and Western brakeman, aims to boost civic involvement while neighbor and incumbent mayor Kenneth Salisbury may not run. Mare South, 18, seeks a school board seat. Family supports his bid.
