Norwalk Architect Thurman J. Peabody Dies at 93

Norwalk architect Thurman J. Peabody died this morning at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was 93 and founded Thurman J. Peabody and Associates in 1953. His firm worked statewide including a million-dollar Medina building for what is now General Telephone Co. and the Huron company building. He supervised additions at Fisher-Titus and contributed to many churches schools and civic buildings in the area. He served in the 106th Division earning a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. Survived by wife Patricia Kohl Peabody and three sons, funeral plans to be announced by Heuston-Gerber.

Fairbanks Man Arrested in Trans Alaska Pipeline Bombings

State troopers arrested 26 year old Larry D Wertz outside his Fairbanks area home on the Elliott Highway as a suspect in a series of blasts that damaged insulation and dented supports on the transAlaska pipeline. Wertz was taken into custody while walking from the woods with a 30-30 rifle and a pistol. He offered no resistance, troopers said.

Vatican Allows Hand Communion In U S Bishops Move

Pope Paul VI approved a U S bishops request making communion by hand an option for recipients. Two thirds of U S bishops at a recent conference supported the change. Priests may still place the host on mouths but hand reception is now allowed as an alternative.

Norwalk High names new principal with Three year contract

The Norwalk Board of Education hired Frank M. McDonald as principal of Norwalk High School starting August 1 on a three year contract worth twenty three thousand twenty eight dollars. He said he is privileged to be here and praised by Supt Rubright. The board also set administrative salaries within a 2.54 percent increase and approved ten new teachers and other staff hires for 1977 78.

New York Bids For 1984 Summer Olympics

Mayor Abraham Beame announced New York City will apply this week to host the 1984 Summer Games with a projected 225 million gap to be covered by federal state and private funding. Beame will submit the application Friday to the U S Olympic Committee. Governor Hugh Carey supported the bid saying resources are capable of handling the project.

Bethlehem Toilets Flooded With Torn Hundred Dollar Bills

In Bethlehem Pennsylvania authorities investigate how torn hundred dollar bills ended up in toilets. A plumber found over $3,000 in pipes at a service station, a cleaner found more at a restaurant, and the sewage plant recovered four complete and nine torn bills. About $4,400 total has been recovered. banks will accept bills with complete serial numbers. A FBI agent recalls a similar incident in Tower City two years ago.
