Postmaster General Eyes No-Strike Path If Congress Acts

Postmaster General W Marvin Watson says mail service could avoid cuts if Congress exempts the Post Office from federal employment reductions. Justice Fortas also said he remained in outraged silence amid Senate scrutiny of his nomination to be chief justice. A militant Black nationalist, Fred Evans, claimed he and 17 others sparked a deadly shootout that killed nine, including three police, as Evans was arrested. State Liquor Director Donald D. Cook ordered a citywide ban on liquor, wine and beer in Cleveland after 10 deaths from shootings and arson. The Ohio delegation to the Democratic National Convention plans a late arrival to Chicago with no presidential caucus until then. The United Steelworkers Union threatens a strike if no new contract by Aug. 1. Viet Cong guerrillas attacked Phu Dau, burning 200 homes and displacing 1,000 civilians, while shelling Hoi An and overrunning two government positions.

Berea Family Dies In Mammoth Cave Park Car Crash

A Berea Ohio family on vacation to Mammoth Cave National Park was killed in a traffic wreck on the road into the park. Albert Caprett 44 Hilda Caprett 41 Jeffrey Caprett 16 and Michael Caprett 11 died in the collision with a truck. the youngest son was critically injured.

The Norwalk based Company C of the 612th Engineer Battalion stood by after Gov Rhodes ordered National Guard mobilization over Cleveland unrest. Caprara said the unit could be moved quickly and likely kept in reserve while meals and security were organized at the armory.
