Astronauts John Young and Michael Collins, after the 70 hour 47 minute Gemini 10 flight, land safely aboard the USS Guadalcanal. Doctors treat them as scientists study two mysterious black boxes for signs of life in space. They undergo 11 days of debriefing and medical checks before a Cape Kennedy return trip to Houston.
Samuel Winchester, 45, dies after being shot in the hip at 4 30 a.m. while waiting for a bus during a fourth straight night of rioting in Cleveland East Side slums. He told police a white man fired the shot as racial turmoil police suspect was organized. Winchester had worked 31 years at a foundry.
A 29 year old Janesville cotton mill worker, Castle Smith, lost his right hand after his arm was caught in a picker machine while cleaning it. He was rushed to Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital at 10 45 this morning and died two hours later at St Luke Hospital after police said he was shot by a white man driving past.
Huron County commissioners will hold a 1:30 p.m. meeting in the Common Pleas Court to discuss a proposed centrally located landfill. Townships villages and cities in the county were notified to send representatives to weigh interest support and potential usage after a health department committee urged disposal options.
The CPI rose three tenths of 1 percent in June, driven by higher food and medical care costs and higher mortgage rates. The index reached 112.9 percent of the 1957-59 average, up 2.5 percent from a year ago, with consumers paying 11.29 for the same market basket. The first half of the year saw a 1.7 percent rise, the largest six month gain since 1958. Food rebounded after a May dip, rising four tenths of 1 percent.

Erie County sheriff reports Judy Ann Irish, 25, was found shot in the right temple at her mother's home on Ohio 99 near Huron. Norwalk Post notes a hit-skip on Ohio 61 south of U S 224 damaging a mailbox and Kenneth Myers's vehicle. Edwin Burr 60 collided with sheep on Ohio 61 injuring none. two sheep owned by Ivan Rogers were killed.
Police Chief Lawrence Hilson says speeding arrests in Norwalk have more than doubled in the first three weeks of July compared with the whole of July last year. Through July 19 there were 43 speeding citations, with three new patrolmen added in June and an unmarked car in use.
