Edison argues Erie Nuclear Plant is needed before 1986
Edison contends the Erie Nuclear Plant must begin by January 1979 to prevent power shortages in the mid to late 1980s, despite Ohio Power Siting Commission findings that first unit would not be needed until 1988 and second until 1990. Hearings at Bowling Green State University opened with multiple parties present and public access expected over several weeks.

Pollution threat from non point sources looms over Great Lakes
A 171 page UPI report to the International Joint Commission warns non point pollution from land drainage and agriculture endangers the Great Lakes ecology. It cites 32 to 90 percent phosphorus origin from non point sources, cites sediments and toxins, and calls for coordinated cross border oversight and tougher production point controls. Norman Berg led the U.S. team and cites costs of at least 100 million annually and a multi year timeline to address the issue amidst ongoing Lake Erie pollution.
