Sen Eugene J. McCarthy refuses to commit to supporting the Democratic nominee if he loses the nomination. He spoke after Alabama delegates to the upcoming Democratic National Convention vowed to challenge loyalty and credentials of all McCarthy delegates.
FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover said at the June SDS national convention at Michigan State University in East Lansing workshops covered sabotage and explosives. He warned participants explored combustible materials and bombs to destroy communications and plumbing systems of strategic facilities.
In Greenfield Massachusetts, the town clock balked at its routine strike. It rang 17 times at 7 a.m. before going quiet for the rest of the day, prompting officials to order major repairs.
The Ohio Canners and Food Processors Day luncheon featured 2,500 glasses of tomato juice with Senator Lausche and Representative Latta among honorees. Latta praised the wholesome qualities of Ohio tomatoes to colleagues.
President Johnson and Secretary of State Rusk travel to Honolulu for private discussions with South Vietnam's Nguyen Van Thieu. Officials expect a low-key review of Vietnam's military and political situation and possible countermoves, with Thieu urging the meeting and Paris negotiations likely to be discussed.
About 100 National Guardsmen joined 700-man 145th Infantry to patrol Akron after a night of rock throwing and window smashing. A 9 p.m. curfew was issued by Major John Ballard amid fights between West Side and North Side youths. Two injured, 45 arrested as police used tear gas and guards patrolled in jeeps and trucks.
The House completed three hours of debate on the administration bill to ban interstate sales of all guns. Rep. Emmanuel Celler criticized the measure as an angry amendment while Rep. Bob Casey defended the need for penalties for gun users in crimes.

Representative Robert H. Michel proposes a National Dividend Plan to distribute 50 percent corporate tax revenue per capita to all citizens who vote in federal elections. He argues this space age approach would shrink welfare programs and reduce federal bureaucracy while strengthening free enterprise.
Wakeman Village Council will review applications for a police chief Monday night. Mayor Paul Burns said one applicant is especially promising. The village has been without its own police since David Ortner resigned Monday, with the sheriff and state patrol providing coverage, each visiting multiple times this week.
Mailbox explosions were reported for the second time this week in a swath between Norwalk and Monroeville. At around 3 a.m. Wednesday several residents, including Mrs. James Wilhelm and Mrs. Charles Pierce, reported blasts and a car seen fleeing. Eight boxes were damaged or destroyed, with one mailbox containing mail ruined. Postal Inspector Tom Bryant and Sheriff’s deputies investigated the incidents.
U S B 52 Stratofortresses conducted their fourth straight bombing raid into North Vietnam and hit SAM firing positions four to 11 miles above the DMZ. No SAM fire was reported. The U S command also noted 188 U S servicemen were killed and 337 wounded last week, the third lowest weekly toll of the year.
