Norwalk's Charter Commission will vote on July 29 to choose a form of government. Four options are weak mayor council strong mayor council commission and city manager council. The decision weighs citizen wishes against efficient service and budgeting.
Jeanne M Holm, a port blonde who joined the military out of poverty, was promoted at a Pentagon ceremony to brigadier general with the Silver Star in a historic milestone for women in the Air Force. Frank Leahy remained in critical condition after abdominal surgery at St Vincent Hospital in Portland.
Lauri Lea Schaefer of Athens won the swimsuit segment and Judy Jones of West Alexandria won the talent segment in the first round of the Miss Ohio contest at Cedar Point. Schaefer is a 1971 Ohio University graduate pursuing theater. Jones performed an acrobatic dance.
Mrs. Philip H. Fulstow 86 lifelong Norwalk resident died after admission to Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital from a heart attack. About 500 Communications Workers of America members were fired by United Telephone Co. after wildcat strikes in 12 Ohio communities. The firings followed a day after 18,000 Ohioans joined a nationwide Bell System strike. A Mansfield spokesman said the workers were dismissed for violating the extended contract that expired last month but was extended for 30 days.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge William R. Mathews ruled that a 20 000 resident city fluoridation requirement is unconstitutional and issued a permanent injunction. The decision is expected to influence reactions statewide to the 1969 General Assembly law.
Father Victor Salandini of San Diego was suspended by the local bishop for using corn tortillas as the communion wafer during masses for Cesar Chavez's United Farm Workers. He was ordered to stop offering mass hearing confessions and preaching.
Considerable early fog gives way to sun with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s. High winds and rain toppled tree limbs in Huron County Thursday afternoon. A falling tree damaged Firelands Electric Cooperative lines cutting about 100 Holiday Lakes subscribers from power until 7:45 p.m. outages also reported in New London. WLKR AM went off air at 4:50 p.m. but FM remained on. Norwalk rainfall measured .19 inch. Northern Ohio Telephone crews restored service on Butler Road. Outages blamed on falling limbs per district manager Charles Winn.
Catholic schools in Ohio plan tuition hikes up to 140 per child to shield programs if state funding is cut. In Cincinnati archdiocese officials say high school rates would rise from 265 to 405 and elementary charges at least 100, contingent on the next two year budget and a $60 million parochial fund. James Condit notes constitutional doubts about the salary supplement, tied to a Supreme Court action on Rhode Island.
