Two Russian cosmonauts led by Col. Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov rocketed into orbit with a United Nations flag as America prepared for its own historic launch. President Ford and 300 viewers watched the lift off in Washington while Apollo astronauts Thomas Stafford Vance Brand and Donald Slayton awaited their turn at Cape Canaveral.
